For those who care to read it, here's my take on the Niners loss to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl yesterday.
---------------------------------------------------
There was obviously a momentum shift between the 1st & 2nd half.
In the 1st half, the Niners held a slight edge by containing Mahomes & protecting Purdy sufficiently to hold the Chiefs to just 2 FGs and to maintain a 10-6 lead at the end of the half.
But, in the 2nd half, the Niners O line didn't protect Purdy as well & Niners D weakened, allowing Mahones more chances to run freely and to complete passes to Kelce & others, giving up a TD & a FG vs a Niner TD & missed PA, which tied the game at 19-19 forcing it into OT.
In OT, the Niners then had to settle for a FG due to the Chiefs intense pass rush & tight pass coverage which put the responsibility on the Niners D to stop the Chiefs which they failed to do.
Why was that?
IMO, the loss of Greenlaw early in the game (who was a key to the Niners winning their 2 playoff games) was also critical to the failure of the NIners D to hold off the Chiefs and I seriously doubt the receiver would have been so open on that final TD pass had Greenlaw been there to possibly pick or deflect it.
Oh well . . .
---------------------------------------------------
It was the Niners chance at redemption and glory but they couldn't come thru to win their 6th SB. They have no one to blame but themselves for the 2 losses to the Chiefs in SB 54 & SB58 and the loss to the Ravens in SB 47.
But, the fact that they got to 3 more SBs in the past 11 years is still evidence of the strength of the team and the organization and I have no doubt that they'll be back to the SB again to try again for their 6th SB win.
---------------------------------------------------
That said, you have to give credit to the Chiefs & Mahomes who have now been in the SB 4 of the last 5 years and who have 3-1 record in that time period with back-to-back wins this year and last and Mahomes now has 3 SB MVPs which puts him right there w/Montana.
We Niners fans had our opportunity to crow during the 1990-2000's when the Niners won their 5 SB's and seemed to dominate the league.
---------------------------------------------------
Now, it's the Chiefs & their fans who have much to celebrate and crow about.
Congrats to them but, as we Niners, SF Giants & Warriors fans know all too well, sports "dynasties" don't last forever.
So, Chiefs fans, enjoy it for as long as you can.
