Is there any risk of forest fires doing this? Some of our parks experienced forest fires when campers built (unapproved) firepits on top of tree roots. The roots embered/burned and spread beyond the firepit, setting nearby tree(s) on fire as a result.
No. It's in my backyard. You have to wet the surrounding area and remove dry plant debris. Common sense fire control steps.

BTW, just a heads up;

There's been significant solar activity the past few days, and the last I checked, 7 X-class flares headed this way.

High potential for the aurora borealis to be visible much further south then normal (some of the projections mentioned as far south as North Carolina 😮).

Seems somewhere between about 2am and 5am EST/EDT tonight may be the peak, extending to tomorrow.

Going to step out into the backyard around 2am, to see if there's a light show. Never seen the aurora in person. Checked off the total solar eclipse from the bucket list. This could be another tick.

B beeinak
should have a prime view.

P.S.
Also a possibility for disruption of things like GPS (first one hit about 12:xx pm today. People have already apparently seen anomalies with GPS), and ham radio, and a small possibility of power disruption. Supposedly some reports of it from the EU already.

P.P.S.

Now upgraded to a G5 class event. First one since 2003 (that knocked out power in parts of Sweden, and took out transformers in South Africa).

Maybe consider filling up gas tanks, just for shits and giggles. Not sure if French Toast fixins are called for.
For anyone who has never seen the aurora, it is nothing like the photos and is truly amazing to see. We mostly see them in winter because our nights are so short in summer. They are worth getting up early to see!

Apparently Centralia, Pennsylvania has had an underground fire since the '60s.

I made a road trip to Centralia about a decade ago. It really doesn’t even look as cool as that photo makes it out to be, unfortunately. All buildings were razed to prevent squatters, and very little of what would lend you to think it had once been populated is remaining, even the streets starting to subvert to ‘wild’. There were a few spots like that crack where a bit smoke was venting, though, and places where it was notably warm enough to melt the snow and ice back.

Still, it’s an incredible story, and as far as I know, still burning.

Probably the most interesting bit of the trip was that I met a buddy there, and then we drove around looking for cool stuff to photograph, including some dark sky areas. Wound up in Hazelton on a Sunday morning, and the only place open for food was a local favorite called ‘Two Sisters’ . Sometimes one can joke about worrying about having an updated tetanus shot before dining in a shithole, but I won’t kid you when I say I’m glad I had mine up to date. This is a shot of the cup I was served coffee in, EXACTLY as it arrived to me.

I'm driving down the road right now. There's a cop that has somebody pulled over on a side street giving somebody a speeding ticket

The car in front of me has slowed way down

There's no need to slow down except some people slow down when they see a cop

This cop is clearly busy, this is not a speed trap

And now we're going 35 and a 45

You could go 50 in a 45 in front of a cop and they're not going to come get you

Ever want to pull somebody out of their car and shake them?
