The old diesels were fine.
Rant on:
Be glad you're not in the great state of californicate. A friend of mine had a BEAUTIFUL service truck, diesel, maybe a ford, equivalent to a 550 or 650. Generator, welder, air compressor, everything you need to do mobile service. IIRC he had a contract with the forest service to service all their equipment - tractors, dozers, trucks, you name it. Paid thousands/year in weight fees to the great state. And he was californicated: to meet (the imaginary) smog requirements he would have had to scrap the truck (easily 20 years of service left) or sell it out of state. Couldn't be operated in californicate any more. His solution was to pack his trash and move out of state where he continues to successfully use the truck to this day, servicing heavy equipment.

The state is beautiful, but it has been taken over by extremists that have swallowed the "climate change" mantra hook, line and sinker. They are doing everything they can to force diesel trucks out of business. "Renewable" diesel is ubiquitous; you can't buy plain old diesel #2 anywhere. And, surprise, surprise, "renewable" diesel has less energy content than fossil fuel #2, so after they make you buy brand new equipment, you get less mileage than if you ran fossil #2, and pay more for it. Plus, the cost of all this BS is exorbitant - I just paid $4.779 per gallon to fill my 2016 450 (which gets about 13 mpg no matter how I drive it) and figured that (for this state) it was a pretty good deal. IIRC under former leadership, diesel was around $3 +- in 2020. I think I just saw a post that said they paid $3.70/gal somewhere other than the left coast. Diesel is what's left after they refine all the other stuff off - the exorbitant cost is clearly a conspiracy to eliminate diesel engines.
Rant off.
