We had a snapping turtle start to make a nest in our garden but it abandoned the spot, most likely because we were working to clean the garden space out. A week went by and she came back to lay them in the nice freshly tilled soil, then got stuck in the fence on her attempted exit whereby I released her so she could make her way back to the stream! I have never seen this before so it’s been cool and I can’t wait to try and catch a glimpse of any babies that make it.

The babies are cute, a miniature replica of the adult you can hold in your palm. But careful, they still can give you a nasty bite even as a baby 😉👍

Just give them a helping hand from your garden back to the stream bank so predators don’t pick them off on their travels there, or they succumb to dehydration on the way.

That's really cool. Speaking of strange nesting choices. We currently have a Dark Eyed Junco that decided to make one of our hanging flower baskets right by our front door her nesting area. We couldn't figure out why this bird kept seemingly leaping out of the gutter and chattering at us.

Well, turns out she made a nest in the basket and there were already 4 tiny eggs in it. So now we're using the back entrance until things go their own way naturally.

I have a pair of Cardinals which nest in the bush right outside the window I am typing by. They are some tireless workers. All day, nonstop.

Under and around the deck, I usually get Phoebes unless I catch it before they start up a new nest.

One of the many pleasures I experienced when visiting family in Maine was witnessing the Cardinals. We do not have them over here and they are such a striking bird. We do have Steller's Jays though, which makes my aunt jealous.

I always enjoyed Steller's Jays...cool birds. We have quite a variety of local birds...from Juncos and Chickadees to large raptors.

The Pileated Woodpecker is a favorite locally.
