What a monster. He’d make a really nice jacket.

Probably wouldn’t taste very good but maybe with a 1/3rd beef, 1/3rd venison mix added to him he’d be edible. Definitely put you in smash burgers for the foreseeable future.
Not a really big one, but a very nice coat for this time of year. They are on the hunt for moose calves right now which happen to frequent the cabin area.

They say that bear meat smells terrible. I've only had it in a stew that my father-in-law made and it was wonderful. They say it's important to cook it thoroughly. I like my red meat pretty rare but you'll get brainworms if you do that with bear.
Really makes a difference what they have been eating. A spring bear that has been mostly eating greens can smell fine and taste great, while later season bears gorging on salmon can be pretty nasty.

I quit hunting years ago, so the wildlife around our place seem to know they won’t end up in a crock pot or smoker🤣

A lifetime ago I was engaged to a girl whose Father ran guided bear hunts in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He gave me some ground black bear once that I made into burgers. I didn’t add much to the meat, just some salt, pepper, onion, and Greek oregano ( my Greek buddy brought it back from Greece, in a ziplock bag, rolled up in his luggage. No idea how something like that goes through Customs without more scrutiny- but it did ). Yes, it was just oregano.
I may still be a dumb ass at 50 but I was only a 21 year old dumb ass then, so far less experienced in daily dumbassery than I am now. I was by no means a good cook or expert on the BBQ. That said, those were the best damn burgers I ever made and in the top 10 that I’ve ever eaten.
Every hunter that I talk to about black bear meat tells me that they think it tastes horrible, but that is the exact opposite of my experience with it.

Everybody's favorite red meat (beef) is not really that great. Due to the size of the animal I reckon. It is coarse grain and mushy.

Just about any other source of red meat, if equally tender, is more firm and finer grain and often makes a better meal. I think the real reason for the popularity of beef is the relative ease of converting grain into meat compared to other red meat animals.

Some of the best tasting game I have eaten was spring black bear. It is all about location (what they are eating), and also a lot about caring for the harvest. Some hunters really botch what they kill with terrible field dressing technique and caring for the meat (imho).

People think bear meat smells and tastes like ass because 90% of them are shot and laid out for pictures, hung up for pictures, driven around to show people who take pictures, then hung up again to skin or dropped off at the processor (where it will sit on the floor or hang so people can take pictures lol), meaning, most hunters treat them like they do their deer and that’s what ruins it.

Shoot them and get the damn hide off within the first 30 minutes so that meat can cool down as fast as possible! It literally spoils within a couple of hours and that’s what people are eating.

Elk is my absolute favorite. They are magnificent animals and are a joy to hunt and experience. I suppose some of that reverence carries over to when I prepare and eat the meat but I've never found its compare in a store.

This guy knows what's up. We have an over overabundance of black bears over here but I can say with no small amount of certainty that most hunters out here hunt for the hide and/or trophy and have little to no interest in the meat. I don't have much experience with the meat myself but I also don't go out of my way to hunt them either. We usually encounter one another in the woods and we go our separate ways.

My dad has tried two different treatments for his cancer and they're not working. I was hoping to find someone who might be able to give me advice on future options.
I would say you need a specialist in his type of cancer. My wife had a sarcoma and had to have her treatment go before a board for review and approval because not all sarcomas are the same. My dad had prostate a few years ago. He was on maintenance and they have already changed treatments to a new highly accurate radiation therapy to get the last of it with the hopes of getting him off maintenance. All cancers, even the same ones are different and respond differently. Good luck and I will be thinking and praying for y’all.
