Random Thought Thread

The Scientology people have a really remote underground vault and compound near here.

Love the redwoods, and that whole area from Crescent City on down through Humboldt county. Every time I'm down there I still have those awe inspiring moments that feel almost like it's the first time again..

Having said that, I'll never forget that the first time I did the loop from 101 over to the Lost Coast and then on up into Ferndale. My first "we're not in Kansas anymore" moment came as I was crossing the river into Honeydew and noticed that the fairly modern steel bridge I was driving across had wood planking instead of an asphalt surface. A little odd, but not a real big deal - it's a pretty rural area and I grew up rural, but the banjos really started playing in my head as I looked up from the timbered surface to the far end of said bridge and saw the faces of five or six locals with maybe 14 or so teeth between them turn up from their whittling to see who the interloper was.

After passing through Honeydew and then driving past some of the grows with their "stay out" signs along the side of the road, even a town as small as Petrolia felt like a reentry into civilization. No idea if the Scientologists were there at the time, but if so they were a lot better at being discreet than the Rajneeshees as I don't recall seeing anything that raised an eyebrow.

I know the old person in front of you on the road is moving too slowly. Instead of acting like a self-absorbed piece of shit and tailgating them, consider that at some point your capacity will be diminished. Nothing in your life requires you to move any faster than they are, you’ve just convinced yourself that it has. Step outside of yourself, recognize that not everyone has full capability and reaction speed, and that it’s crucial to THEIR sense of self worth to have these last few moments of freedom which driving allows for. Give them the space they need, and slow down.

Nah.

There comes a time where you should not be driving, at all, ever again. Driving is serious and requires a certain level of fitness and reaction time. Getting old is tough and there is a loss of freedom and independence. Some is imposed upon you and others you have to impose on yourself.

Try an experiment.
For 1 hour…drive within the law. Pay close attention to controlling your vehicle…with both hands.
You’ll see how sloppy you are normally.
You’ll see how crummy everyone else is too.
There’s also an age when you shouldn’t be playing with knives.
Time will have its revenge.

I was just trying to get you to go around me...so I could ask when you were gonna send me one of your knives. Old? I'll give you old, sonny!!!

I don’t tailgate, but if the vehicle in the left lane is impeding the flow of traffic it pisses me off. Summertime here increases the traffic drastically with tourists who think going 50 in a 65 is fine as they slam on the brakes every time they see an animal or view.
