MI used to have similarly stupid laws. ā€œDuty to retreatā€ even when someone has broken into your home.

ā€œLevel of force used must be proportionalā€, like the above, if they’re unarmed, you can’t be armed (2-on-1. Younger aggressors vs smaller, older victims. Disparity of force. Hello?). ā€œOh, you put down your baseball bat because it looked like they were unarmed, but they were hiding a knife? Too bad, so sad. Tough shit for youā€.

We finally got Castle Doctrine in 2007 (2008?), where use of deadly force is allowed to defend yourself from potential harm, anywhere someone makes illegal forced entry into an occupied roofed dwelling (so an attached garage counts, along with the house itself, of course. And even a tent, if you’re camping somewhere legally).

Had one just a few years ago. Some drugged up nutjob was kicking and banging on a woman’s back door, trying to force entry despite her yelling at the guy to go away, and that she was on the phone with the police. He continued trying to break in the back door, and the 911 call recorded her yelling, ā€œI have a gun! Stop trying to get in or I’ll shoot!ā€. He continued and she shot him through the door, citing that she was afraid the door was about to be breached. No charges filed.

Minnesota is stupid though...

But Colorado hasn't gone completely down the tubes 😊

CO stand your ground anywhere you can be legally

If I'm on my property, minding my own business, and someone comes here intending me harm, I will kill them.

Laws go this way and that way. Your rights and the laws that apply to you depend on what side of an imaginary line you stand on. One state or country says, that's fine, another says you go to jail for defending yourself. It makes it difficult for a rational person to respect any particular law when they are so arbitrary. The laws of man have been more consistent over time.

At the end of the day, modern laws are like an HOA mandate. Scribblings on paper.

We all have responsibilities and there are mandates that go beyond the written words of your local ordinance. You do what you need to do to protect yourself and those under your protection.

It's tragic, the old folks who get tied up in all of this bullshit. That's the real crime. The lives of criminals really do not matter and the lives of the people affected by them really do. People need to do better, providing rights for the innocent victims better than the rights of the criminals.

On the other hand, in CO I am trusted to stick a knife in someone's chest* on a moment's notice but not to buy a 16 round magazine, and not to purchase a(nother) gun without waiting 3 days**, and I now have to pay a state fee equivalent to 10x my FFL fee to keep my firearms business... Colorado (and NM) are rapidly becoming (more) unfriendly.

*I am licensed to stick a knife in someone's chest to, for instance, insert a thoracostomy tube to try to save their life.

** I personally don't have to wait 3 days since I have an FFL (although the legal position there is muddy).

I really can’t comprehend the idiocy of the types who coddle repeat offenders, while trying to crucify someone who was defending themselves or loved ones (or even a total stranger).

There’s no question that the statistics show that violent crimes tend to be committed by a small subset of repeat offenders. Remove those, and the rates of violent crimes would plummet. (Same goes for property crimes, and most crimes in general. Allow them to get away with a slap on the wrist, and there’s no incentive to stop).

I know - we've gone down hill here, but not completely down the tubes yet. It is getting worse.

To all the others GO BACK TO CALIFORNIA DAMIT!!

Not really

I would seriously just cover this port for now but I don't have a way to do that either but I don't have a way to do that either

I know what each of those words mean individually, but not what they mean when put together in that order

Not a completely appropriate response to the point you were trying to make, but not always easy to slip this one in to a conversation…

NC is still pretty reasonable about the Castle Doctrine and self defense.

My county sheriff's office is great. They allow me to shoot with them at the range for my LEOSA qualifications, or if I just need to dial in a firearm. I do the LEOSA annually, but don't wear out my welcome for personal stuff unless needed.

I feel fortunate to have such a good department locally, and to know the sheriff and one of the captains personally.

Yes, go back to the California and NOT Texas. We've gotten enough over the last 5 years and don't need any more, unless of course they're fellow C.O.C.K.s.

Beware, some activist prosecutors will use signs like this as evidence against you should you have to resort to deadly force. They will argue it proves your intent to engage in violence regardless of whether or not it was strictly necessary. Similar arguments have been made by prosecutors against police officers with skull decals on their rifles. Asinine as it may be, urban and suburban jurors might agree.

I know. I'm fun at parties, I swear.
