We had submitted lots of information to include hunting logs, journals, pictures and location information to Cornell Univ. for a massive coyote study they did and one observation was that current hunters, seasons and annual take doesnāt put a dent in the overall population and could actually be contributing to the growth of coyote numbers by ātrainingā them to live in smaller areas (this can also lead to less coyote territory battles). Shooting random coyotes here and there is fun but itās not doing anything for the neighborhood other than in the very short term. Shoot the dominate male and the next one that comes in probably has a female thatās going to have a litter of 7 lol.
We could shoot and trap 200-300 a year between a group of about 15 of us. All the local clubs have ācoyote contestsā that can bring in a few hundred dead at each one so we were all killing thousands of coyotes each season and every year we could all go back to the same spots and do it again, itās like the damn things spawn out of nowhere like a video game!
(Our best spots to hunt, guaranteed to get the dogs on chase and get us shooting was releasing the dogs near culdesac neighborhoods with railroad tracks nearby)
