Random Thought Thread

The wife got an Apple watch as a gift recently. It was fairly reasonable in price. I think it was under 200$. When she went to set it up it turned out her iPhone that was seven years old was too old to work with it. The watch won’t even tell time without a newer iPhone associated with it. So now, in order to make it work, she had to get a 1000$ iPhone. And the new iPhone has different plugs for charging, so all of the various chargers she has need to be replaced. It pretty crazy that they sell you a 1000$ phone but even if it works fine, they make it obsolete within seven years. They got us though, so pretty good business model I guess.

The user base screams when they don't get something new every year or two. We, who like to keep their tech for along time, are in the minority. Apple still has better support for their older systems and phones vs the competition. As small bone, at least to us old dogs.

You can use the old charges & cables with an adapter. I know I do here for some, but also new cables are sometimes a better decision. The chargers these days all have removable cables, so new cable and old charger works.

I have a TV that's still in use that was delivered 21 years ago. My new one is about 15 years old.

I keep my vehicles for a long time, and computers until they stop working or no updates are available, depending on whether they are used for financial matters.

My stereo equipment, receivers, speakers etc are all at least 20 years old, most older still. I have a set of Lafayette floor standing speakers from the 70's...but they aren't in use currently.

My last Windows machine was XP Pro which I used for years after it was obsolete. I think I may have something somewhere with 3.1 on it...

My first Glock from 1988 is still going strong, but on its second frame.

My stuff's not old...it's vintage. That's the ticket.

Microsoft is ending support such as security updates for Windows 10 this autumn

And I am done with Microsoft

So I'm going to need to migrate to some other kind of operating system. Linux I guess.

I've been using Microsoft since Windows NT 4.0. I hated it back then too. This is going to be a bit of an adjustment.

For me personally, I feel like Windows peaked around Windows 7. I wish they could have left well enough alone and simply kept that working rather than the endless changes, the endless updates, the endless problems.

Their desire to stick a thumb into each and every one of my pies is a problem and it's time for them to go.

But I'm not sure how to make this transition. I'm old now. 😞

...yet, still somehow more tech savvy than the kids today...

I've been running Fedora linux since before it started wearing a hat.

USB-C master race. Good riddance to proprietary cables.

I wish I knew how to harvest my old electronics for the gold and palladium or whatever stuff is in there.
Sounds like it's easy. Hammers, dangerous acids and maybe something you can smelt with.

Just use harsh and very poisonous chemicals, just like the little kids do overseas! :(
Pretty sure one of the dangerous methods used, is mercury. Mercury dissolves gold, IIRC. The dangerous part, is that to recover the gold, they made use of Mercury’s low boiling point, and just boil it off with no protection. Yay… mercury vapor.

*** I was one of those kids who was fascinated with mercury. Held some in the palm of my hand etc. Hmmm… I’ll just blame the mercury for any of my words or actions 😂

Something small, angry, and quite energetic exited through the side of the case on my shop air compressor. Anyone have a recommendation for a (non-chinesium) belt drive compressor pump that will run on a 5hp 240v motor? Need enough pressure to run air tools and blow up inflate 110psi tires... hate to replace the hard-installed 80gal vertical tank system when only the compressor pump itself is dead... hate buying new chinesium every 1-2 years...

youtube has many videos oh how to poison yourself with acid gas
Learned about this one last year.

If you don’t want to spoil your day/week, DON’T click the spoiler

Heard about more suicides using different types of poison gas. More than a few even included taped notes to warn First Responders etc. of the use of poison gas, so whoever found them/had to deal with it, could take precautions.

My initial thoughts were, “How would those people even know about these gases, and/or how to make them using commonly available stuff?”. That was when I learned that it’s become a more common trend, that’s spread due to social media, and the internet. People read/hear about others making these poison gases to commit suicide with, and they look up these instructions, make and use it to commit suicide.

And I thought the increasing use of BBQ grills in a closed bathroom to commit suicide by carbon monoxide was awful.😞
