- Sometimes it's Martens (or part of the family). Then the cats would be in trouble.
Agreed!
At my Northern Property, they are plentiful, and night cats are rarely caught on the camera traps, except the Bobcats.
Martins and Fishers are plentiful there, especially the small Ermine.
But here there is none, absolutely zero weasel (family) living at all (sad). Only competition at night is the Great Horned Owls, and luckily they also control the Skunk population quite well.
The skunks seem to be their preferred prey here, followed by rabbits, then small common rodents.
They roost and breed about 100 yards away, so I get a first hand view year around.
First week of July is really cool, as that is when they teach the new born to fly and start to hunt on their own. Very loud at night, but really cool to see and especially hear.
Quite rarely and occasionally a Coyote may run though, along with a Red Fox. Usually durn the breeding season.
By rarely I mean just 1-2 times each few years, it’s super rare to even see one.
The different birds of prey take care of the daytime problems, and the Owls and cats take care of the nighttime problems.
I’m more than happy with what they do here.
Nature is amazing, and I love it when it works in harmony. (Although it can get a bit noisy at times).
