Random Thought Thread

My last employer switched to that years ago (only in US offices - it’s illegal in Europe).

The result was that people took less vacations than before (being worried about their job).

The employer had the benefit of not having to accrue vacations / not having to pay them out before layoffs. Smoke and mirrors, IMO.
I had 30 PTO days before my company was acquired by the new company. I guess I'm lucky in that the department I am in encourages the employees to take time off.

So far I've taken 30+ days off a year since the acquisition. I don't plan on taking anything less. Life's too short not to hunt, fish and go to cutting competitions. Maybe a few days with the family too. 😁

Yep. We've been "unlimited" for a long time. It mostly means I don't have a bank of vacation to get paid when I leave - I haven't taken more than two days off in a row since before Covid.

The company that bought us is forcing some of us to take at least two weeks a year starting next year, so I guess that will change. (It is a fraud detection measure, not concern with our welfare.)

This is my position as well. I had 30 days before the “unlimited” started. Now I keep that up; typically take 30-40 days off a year. That plus the 18 holidays seems like a decent deal.

Don't believe I've ever had a radler style beer but the talk of it earlier made me curious so I decided to pick some after work. It's still nearly 90° here and I gotta say, I'm finding it very refreshing.

Have the day off 😁

Clear skies today. This is the difference the sprinkler mod makes, from setting a water timer for 10 minutes, vs how hot the section of the roof the single sprinkler doesn’t reach, gets from baking in the noonday sun.

P.S.
This little Seek Nano 300 is a useful little device. You’ll find yourself looking at everything from checking insulation, to the breaker box to see which breakers/circuits are warmer, finding mammals at night…

Wait until you see someone fart

What? I'm just saying it sounded pretty cool.

Would you rather say you went blind because somebody stuck you in the eye with a pencil, or because of freaking laser beams man!
If it's not a spitting cobra or that dinosaur from jurassic Park, you can keep your blindness; I don't need it.

I've never heard of that!!!!!

I usually only can take a total of 6 days off a year..... but I like what i do and a lot of people do not do well when I'm not there

I know, the world’s messed up. I’m at a computer and in the AC all day and I get a ton of time off. You slave over cars and paint (probably need your own physical therapist) and get a lot less. It’s a backwards world.

Nah I'm cool with it , I like what I do and the fact that others pay checks depend on me being efficient and good is motivation

I like that part of it!

I might not look it... but I'm motivated m fer lol

I imagine you get more satisfaction out of your work than I do mine. I have to finish work and go fix something around the house to make me feel productive.

I put in 13hrs 53 mins today. Working outside. My piss was brown.
I get 3 weeks PTO but they would “prefer” I take it during the winter when we are slow.
Actually, they would prefer I don’t take it at all.

One of my employers “denied” my vacation request form two weeks prior to my vacation (because we were busy). I turned it in 2 months before my vacation dates.
I told them that, although they call it a “vacation request form”, it was just my way of letting them know what dates I wouldn’t be at work.

Just posted for perspective.

Can we trade gigs? 'Cause in my corporate job, the day before this holiday is when management drops a new crash-priority project before they head off to their vacation.
I'm a lawyer. When business is slow, just dragging along and impossible to bill enough hours, I schedule a trip. Without fail, the one day you try to leave early to hi the road, a client will drop a big, fat, hot potato in your lap that absolutely must close by 8:30am on the Monday after you return. It's a sure fire way to get business booming again.
