Random Thought Thread

Small but strong storm just came through. Came out of nowhere.

Hail 3/4 inch and strong winds. Lost a bunch of smaller branches and a few bigger ones. Cleanup tomorrow.

Gutters overflow like crazy, no flooding.

Power and WiFi keeps flickering.

First rain we have had in nearly 4 weeks, we sure needed it.

Temp dropped from 103 to 67, humid but feels excellent.

It’s nearly over, sudden wild Mother Nature strikes.

Nate's random thought:

Or memory actually

When I was a younger, dumber, less experienced machinist. Working in someone's shop.

I once set up a part, on the table if I remember correctly (not a vise or fixture), loaded a new program hit cycle start and then went to go sit on the throne for a few minutes.

Started on my way back to the machine and realized I hadn't touched anything off. I had not located anything or entered any offsets on the part for this new program, although it was using tooling in the carousel that had already been touched off on some other project. And I came back to a neatly machined piece, not a disaster. The stock had cleaned up, I hadn't hit any clamps or the table, I got incredibly incredibly lucky and just happened to set my stuff down in just the right place.

That's when I started using the phrase "it's good to be good but it's better to be lucky"

About the same time frame I had the scariest crash I ever had.

I had stopped the program due to some kind of a problem, I don't remember what, but the cutter was low.

Changed the program and started it over from the beginning but the first move in this program was an X Y move and then it was going to rapid down to the Z plane. But I was already below that plane. This was a brand new Haas VF super II with something like 1,200 IPM rapids. It was a relatively high performance machine for the day.

That sucker rapided over and hit the vise with the spindle so hard that not only did it move the vise, it slid it far enough over to hit the vise beside it and move it too.

I was like, well shit. Just totaled that spindle. That's not good. (crash something hard enough and they're not even rebuildable). But, I had hit it with the casting just beside actual the spindle, not the spinny bit and miraculously everything was fine. Which was a miracle because Hass machines are not particularly durable. I squared up my vises, reloaded my parts and continued my day like nothing happened.

Edit: it was about this time frame I started adding G0 G28 G91 Z0 at the start of my programs. tinfoil hat timmy tinfoil hat timmy
