New sniper world record yesterday, two kills at 13000 feet:

With AI and drone-based target acquisition .... does that count? My wife thinks not. What say you ?
Yea that’s one of those things that is going to get easier as tech advances. Impressive but not nearly as impressive as it would’ve been minus the technological aids. IMO. But I guess those are what made it possible in the first place

Agreed. Isn’t that like firing a rocket? AI and drone support is essential a guidance system. Not that I know anything about those things…

Nobody is safe!🤣

Watching video of a girl coached by her dad hit a metal 18x30” target at 1 mile 3 for 3 while prone was impressive to me. People shooting 4” targets at 300 yards with .22 LR is impressive (the drop and drift of that round at distance is wild).

I have been reading and researching precision shooting lately as I plan to get into it when we move. There are some truly amazing shots out there, as well as some pretty amazing technology. Scopes alone have come so far in the last decade.

Where are you moving to ? Also, have you picked a caliber ?

One of my hunting buddies has the Burris scope that has an integrated laser range finder and does all the ballistic calculations for you and gives you an illuminated aiming point. He was up early in his side by side on his way to his hunting spot and hit a deer. The rifle flew out and smashed the scope. So much irony it’s hard to dissect it all. They did replace it under warranty though.

Glad they had a good warranty!!! Lucky for your friend!!!

Also, where are you located? Early for deer hunting around here! 😊

Nate's random thought:

Or memory actually

When I was a younger, dumber, less experienced machinist. Working in someone's shop.

I once set up a part, on the table if I remember correctly (not a vise or fixture), loaded a new program hit cycle start and then went to go sit on the throne for a few minutes.

Started on my way back to the machine and realized I hadn't touched anything off. I had not located anything or entered any offsets on the part for this new program, although it was using tooling in the carousel that had already been touched off on some other project. And I came back to a neatly machined piece, not a disaster. The stock had cleaned up, I hadn't hit any clamps or the table, I got incredibly incredibly lucky and just happened to set my stuff down in just the right place.

That's when I started using the phrase "it's good to be good but it's better to be lucky"

About the same time frame I had the scariest crash I ever had.

I had stopped the program due to some kind of a problem, I don't remember what, but the cutter was low.

Changed the program and started it over from the beginning but the first move in this program was an X Y move and then it was going to rapid down to the Z plane. But I was already below that plane. This was a brand new Haas VF super II with something like 1,200 IPM rapids. It was a relatively high performance machine for the day.

That sucker rapided over and hit the vise with the spindle so hard that not only did it move the vise, it slid it far enough over to hit the vise beside it and move it too.

I was like, well shit. Just totaled that spindle. That's not good. (crash something hard enough and they're not even rebuildable). But, I had hit it with the casting just beside actual the spindle, not the spinny bit and miraculously everything was fine. Which was a miracle because Hass machines are not particularly durable. I squared up my vises, reloaded my parts and continued my day like nothing happened.

Edit: it was about this time frame I started adding G0 G28 G91 Z0 at the start of my programs. tinfoil hat timmy tinfoil hat timmy
Edit... program... reset is your friend

On Swiss setups I end up moving stuff manually up and out of the way when stopping programs in the middle before restarting.

Shrug

Planning to move to SE TN… if Blues allows me to get that close. 🤣 Our cabin property is listed for sale and once it is sold, the house in town goes up, then we scoot.

I have a Sauer 6.5 Creedmoor on the way to me now. When we get moved, I plan to take classes. The farthest I have ever shot just for fun was about 600 yards (and it seemed a long way out). There are some shooting clubs out there that have 1000 and 1200 yd ranges which would be fun. I also want to do the rimfire precision shooting, so am eyeballing a CZ 457 MTR as well as fixing up my 10/22 Target. The ‘Long Gong Shoot’ with .22 LR at 300 yards looks like a real blast.

Random- I was happy the bears and birds have left me plenty of raspberries to add to my morning oatmeal.

Also, having the correct battery for my hotwire makes all the difference! I was only getting about 4 days out of a spare Polaris Ranger battery, but this Duracell Marine/RV 80AH was still putting out plenty of juice 12 days later.

I’m in Northern California. It wasn’t this year. We do have a relatively early season though. They have the mentality of sell more tags during an early season when there is a lower success rate. That way more people have the opportunity to get out there. I tend to agree with that. I may be biased because I have my own private timberland that I live on, and don’t have to rely solely on public land. Although I do go out there sometimes when me and my buddies want to go camp out there. It’s not too crowded around here.
