Did I mention how much I love the internet?
Furnace started blowing cold last Winter. Did a little web searching. OK, found a YT video of the exact model of this old ass furnace.
1) how to clean the flame sensor
2) checking the rollout switch
Did those. Got it working again. Seemed to work fine all season but went ahead and ordered a new flame sensor and a couple rollout switches as backups, for maybe $50 shipped.
Fired it up this year. Worked fine for a couple weeks, then blowing cold again. Hmmm… keeps making a clicking when it tries but fails to fire up. Igniter? Nope.
Turns out it’s the damper door motor. Look around online. WTF. Sites are listing the return spring alone for $70-$80+, and the damper door motor for $3xx to $5xx.
Found a couple places listing the motor for $1xx. Sorry, OOS. No idea on lead time. One of them was nice enough to put me on hold while they called the supplier. No stock in the country. Lead time of 4-8 weeks. Damn.
Hah. Found the part number on eBay for $120. Last one they had.
Went to remove the old motor. Dang. How the heck do you get this thing out? There’s hardly any room. Found a video of someone doing exactly that on the same model of this old ass furnace. “Ohh… so that’s the trick”. Got it replaced in about 30 minutes and everything’s working fine since yesterday.
Saved at least $3xx on the part alone. Way more for an HVAC call out. Old neighbors had a similar experience two winters ago. Furnace not blowing hot. Similarly old furnace. Wound up with $$$$($?) for a whole new furnace installed.
Possibly something similar. “Oh, can’t find the part, but we can have a new furnace put in ASAP”.
*** and being prepper minded is good. After a winter power outage a few years back, I now have several indoor-safe propane heaters as emergency backups (2 Big Buddy heaters and a Mr Heater 30,000 BTU ventless unit). The 30k unit alone can keep the main area toasty. Loaned one of the Big Buddy units to the old neighbors (along with multiple cans and 20lb tank of propane) during a previous power outage. They said it kept their place a comfortable 74f.
Bought them one for Christmas a few years back.
