I shot a coyote last night that was fucking with my dog

Well, not fucking with my dog. That's a figure of speech.

Never mind
We saw far too many coyotes this deer season and killed three while hunting this last week. We filled our tags late yesterday so my buddy and I set up and spent today calling these in. A few less of the sumbitches to bother anyone's dog.

I let a trapper come in on my property as it was out of control. Took out 51 over the season, so much better now.

That’s a great season for one property, holy crap! I hear them all the time and see them on the road at night but haven’t been finding many tracks in the yard or even the little field I have out back, they seem to stay away which is nice. I’m always watching and waiting with the rifle ready though!

It was 80 acres

The Turkeys and Grouse slowly came back, it was a delight to see them.

Then 3 different packs of Coyotes moved into the property.

No more Turkeys or Grouse were seen. As they nest on the ground.

I don’t allow hunting or trapping on my property, but this was the final straw.

I’m sure he didn’t get all, but enough.

The Turkeys and Grouse aren’t back yet, but they will be soon. It takes years to reclaim the area once again.

I was surrounded by a pack at dusk dragging a Buck out. 5 to 10 yards they surrendered me. I dare not gut it out there.

The high power was left in the deer stand, and i carried the 20g. I didn’t have to shoot, but was a hairy situation and my heart pumping for sure.

Got him back to camp and used the truck to pull him up till dawn.

The yotes didn’t seem afraid of anything, which in itself was more alarming than anything else.

Not very big, but big balls for sure. Pistol no way, shotgun for sure, especially that close with a pack and I’m all alone.

Luckily it all turned out ok, and no shots were fired, close, but no cigar.

Definitely had a beer afterwards.

Seems like a 20g message to one of the coyotes might have been in order to educate them on the dangers of surrounding a human. Glad you came out unscathed. That situation comes with some pucker factor for sure.

I had the same thing happen to me about a year ago. I was walking in the woods with a rabbit that I had shot and I got surrounded by Coyotes. Like you, I had left my rifle behind. I had on my headlamp and I could see them when they would look at me and their eyes would reflect back but it was very disconcerting how they could simply disappear when they're standing 30 ft away from you in dark woods. I could hear them circle around me. I boogieed back to the house and now I stay strapped at all times.

The coyote I shot the other night seemed to show no fear. Jo had called my dog back inside and when I first saw it, it was close enough to the house I could have hit it with a rock. I didn't realize that it wasn't my dog because I didn't realize my dog had just gone in through the front door and I was still behind the house. I walked through the house to get out front to join what I thought was my dog but was greeted by my dog in the house. Meaning the thing I had seen through my thermal was the coyote and it was really close. When I stepped out front to find it again it had started moving off so I watched it for a while and the damn thing turned around and started coming back towards me. It got within about 50 yards and I could see pretty clearly that it was in fact a coyote and presented a good shot before I shot it. It had plenty of opportunity to get away. Little bastard was literally walking directly towards me.

Had another one come out last night when I was taking the little dog out to pee. I had my thermal but I couldn't find it. I could hear it walking through the woods behind me though and it started yipping as it got a little farther south. I walked about an eighth of a mile to try to head it off in my back field where it was headed but it quieted down and then disappeared towards the east off my property.

I need to get a thermal monocular with a wide field of view because scanning with a rifle optic is not working.

They become ballsy no doubt about it. Even it’s one, that’s bad. A small pack, well that’s another scenario. They are definitely becoming more unaffected by people.

I’m sorry, I love wildlife, but they are too much. The need to put them down humanly is justified, and I feel no remorse at all.
