Random Thought Thread

I resurrected my stereo which lasted 20 years before dying in a lightning strike, and set it up in my new place.
I did some frequency sweeps with a calibrated microphone to help adjust the speaker placement. In an untreated room you can land on various bass resonances and cancelations. My starting point was pretty bad, but I improved it quite a bit just by moving them around.
When you think that my shooting ear muffs dampen 30db, a 20db dip is pretty huge.

The profile for the high frequencies is pretty typical in these measurements. I'll have to check my speaker's reference output curve.
Most people focus on the bass and mid region as that's where you can most easily tweak things.
If I get it close to ideal, then I can optionally adjust it electronically (dsp).

ETA likely the mic (measurement setup), my speaker is within 6db from 30Hz to 50k Hz...

I'm getting a lot less in the past few months than I used to. Guess it's just the march of time.

I started taking a 5mg Natrol (Melatonin) tablet before bedtime and it helps me fall asleep faster, but I still wake up earlier than I like, often more than once.

After seeing his work on Bladeforums, I made the mistake of pre-paying for some kitchen knives from Francisco Vaz (https://www.fvazknives.com/) back in November of 2023, right before flooding shut down the airport his product goes through (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Rio_Grande_do_Sul_floods). Natural disaster --> package transit interrupted for more than 2 years now. Francisco insists that the knives will still be forthcoming, but it's a little tough to maintain faith in that at this point.

Now, I can't really blame anyone but myself for this, pre-paying for something like this, coming from another continent. He seemed like a pretty solid guy on the forums and there were people who appeared happy with his work. After the floods, several other forum members were in a similar situation. Some of them have received their knives, I assume some are still waiting or have given up. I search on his name every now and then to see if there's any news (he is no longer active in the forums). I recently responded to someone else's thread, basically a 'me too' about this problem.

Lo and behold, this shows up on my doorstep about a week later (it's not pristine because it's already been to work)...

Not from Francisco, but from a BF member and occasional poster in these environs.

Not because he owed me anything, just to try to take some of the sting and frustration out of my bad deal with Francisco Vaz. Which (not holding my breath) may still turn out OK (except for the long delay) .

That's the kind of folks that make this community what it is. I just wanted to publicly say thanks, and hats off to woodysone woodysone

At age 4, I watched a gestapo goon's face melt in Raiders of the Lost Ark and observed a heart transplant from a dragon that sounded like Sean Connery in Dragon Heart. I turned out fine*.

Now, my wife wants me to fast-forwad the fascist hyena marching scene when my daughter watches Lion King. Idk what happened.

Let the kids watch, it's better than 99% of the stuff they can find online.
