Random Thought Thread

I got a tooth pulled today. But throughout the whole procedure (well, as much as I could) the dentist and I talked extensively about bird hunting, and in particular his epic hunt for the Himalayan Snowcock, which was transplanted to a very specific mountain range in the U.S. where it now exists. He had to bivy above 11,000' for three nights to bag this bird, and was excited to show me picks after he was done pulling my tooth.

And then, when he left the Dental Assistant was still puttering with some stuff for me, so I asked her what she likes to do for fun. She said, "Oh, the usual stuff - I like to ride horses, fish and hunt."

This my trip to the dentist today. And I walked out of there reminded of why I love living here so much. It's people like that.

Then again if I put that $250 on top of a basic. I almost got a signature.
Wonder if ecam is an option? This is like the Dek 1,2,3 preorder. There will be regrets.

Am I going to dust off some of the remaining ecam for my Skinner?

Yes. Good Lord man.

Although. It was me. I would go with the vintage. It's a fraction of the price and it's practically as good.

Although, if it was me I would go with wood on this one. But a lot of that is just nostalgia for me personally.

I have acquired some original gangster American Osage orange for this project and it has been seasoning in the weld shop for the last year. To me, that's the material for this.

And honestly this still doesn't even do it justice.

It's beautiful isn't it? I mean, in person, in hand. It's kind of impossible to capture it in a still photograph but it's like looking down into the wood.

And it's practically as durable as micarta

It's dishwasher safe!*

(*it is absolutely not dishwasher safe)

For me personally it's literally one of my favorites. Actually for this specific application it is my favorite.

There are different flavors of Osage orange. Most of the material that you see is South American and it's more popular because it holds its orange color better and it's a larger piece of wood that works better. I'm going to be using American Osage which is more problematic to work with. It's smaller, it darkens, but trust me it is the better material for this. It is so beautiful. I used to get it off my aunt's farm in Oklahoma but I haven't had that in a while. It was difficult to find this.
