The water heater has a thermostat on the elements, you can turn the temperature up on the elements so that the water is scalding hot and then adjusted it the faucets. The mixer valve on the shower handle that is one handle, has an adjustment behind it so that you can make it hotter as well.
I usually turn mine up at the elements on the water heater. I think it also helps the elements stay cleaner, it burns the calcium buildup off.
I think the factory setting on a lot of water heater elements is around 120° today so people don't get burned, I usually turn mine up till about 126 or around thereand that's usually pretty hot. But I am in Arizona and our water is usually pretty warm and hot in the summer. So it gets good headstart.
Make sure you warn your family if you do turn it up
