Everyone needs to do their part for this country if we want to be #1 again.

Interesting chart. When you travel abroad, the difference is very noticeable.
It’s a reality bitch slap when walking back into a US airport after being abroad for a while.

It’s also an interesting observation to note that the US is one of the few anomalies, where the poorest subset tends to be amongst the fattest cohort.

In most other countries in the world, the poorest subset tends to have difficulty getting regular meals, much less eating to such excess that they’re obese.

It's the gibs

I think there's something either in the food or taken out of it here.

Either something makes us super fat by turning something in our bodies off or on after eating it for a length of time or we are just taking in such nutritionally depleted calories that we can't stop eating it because our bodies are malnourished literally all the time.

I agree

There's a lot of chemicals etc in food here

Didn't the semaglutide medications prove that people get less fat when they eat less food? I think the problem mainly is addiction, the tobacco companies took over food companies and worked for decades to make foods more addictive. So when you're battling hunger at the same time you're battling a genuine physical addiction, it's harder not to keep eating.

10 years ago, I spent 6 weeks in South Korea. I saw 2 fat people, a woman and her child. They were visiting family; they lived in the US. I'm sure the family gave her hell.
This was an interesting observation from my college years, that other folks have also noticed.

I mixed with quite a few foreign exchange students from all over. I noticed this phenomenon amongst the females (mostly because that was what I paid more attention to 😅), but many of them were pretty slim when they first arrived, and one common comment when hanging out (especially going out to eat) was, “You actually eat all that? This is a lot”.

Within a year, the ones who’ve ‘adapted’ to average US portion sizes, have gained anywhere from 10 - 30+lbs. Sometimes, the ones who fly home for the Summer come back closer to their original weight, and from then on, they’re a lot more cautious about their portion sizes, to avoid that weight gain.

Average portion sizes in the US are notably larger to folks who’ve traveled quite a bit. Whether it’s ordering pasta in Italy, or food in Thailand; the portion sizes ordering the same dish in a US restaurant tend to be anywhere from 150% - 200% the portion size in the home country. ***Synov’s pics are another interesting observation; in many/most foreign restaurants, you see a lot of the plate. In US restaurants, people seem to feel cheated when they see too much of the plate not buried with food.

I talked to a couple of restaurant owners about it. They all made the same comment, “If we served the same portion sizes you see in our home countries, Americans think we’re being stingy, even if the prices reflect the smaller portions, then they leave bad reviews and it hurts business”.

That’s the ‘easy’ answer many people try to use to absolve them of discipline and personal responsibility.

“It has to be a difference in the food! It’s not MY fault!”

No one’s forcing you to eat 4,000 kcal of fast food daily.

“The food pyramid made me fat!”

If they actually followed the food pyramid, ate more fruits and vegetables and limited themselves to no more than 2,000 kcal per day, AND engaged in at least some daily physical activity, they likely wouldn’t be fat, and certainly not obese.

Americans are so used to eating ridiculous quantities that I’ve regularly heard the comment, “What? So I have to starve myself?”. Eating 2,000 kcal isn’t even remotely close to ‘starving yourself’, but when people are used to stuffing themselves with 4,000kcal/day, they THINK it feels like starvation. Sorry, but you don’t even know what actual starvation is.

I think it’s really palatable foods and drinks with a crap load of calories in them that are cheap and widely available.
Drinks can be a really easy way to bring up your calorie count. Soda and sugar packed drinks went from being a treat to part of a meal. I doubt most people who order 1300+ meal combos even worry about a 2000 calorie daily suggestion.

I know I need to trim down a few winter lbs.

I'm on day 2 of a water fast. If you've never fasted it is a good way to learn that you don't have to eat when your stomach is growling, you can just ignore it and it will stop bothering you and you won't die or even really feel bad. I started doing this for autophagy and various health/metabolic benefits, but I also dropped about 12 pounds the last time I did a ~80 hour fast. I gained back about 15 pounds since then by eating a ton of fried foods and cheeseburgers and ice cream and pouring honey straight out of the bottle into my mouth and guzzling beers etc. but that was optional.

My point was that the lower income persons tend to be on some sort of assistance financially and the best most nutritious foods tend to be more expensive and less attractive package wise to children.

Thus. People who have less tend to eat less nutritious food even when given help.

I worked in a grocery store for 12 years and have seen it all.

The injections also proved that body positivity was all nonsense. People don’t want to do it the hard way. Put the fork down. Calories in, calories out. Pre workout is kicking in. I’m going to the gym
I have a run scheduled for tomorrow. The first couple weeks are the hardest. I'm getting signed up for a gym membership today and my oldest will be joining me 2 days a week

We are essentially force fed a diet consisting of high calorie, simple carbs because that's what get subsidized. Big Ag is addicted to government hand outs. Cut government subsidizing and Big Ag will grow other crops. Soy beans, wheat , and sugar are not real food, but that's what is cheapest to buy right now.
