This is another excuse.

There are PLENTY of nutritional options that are cheaper than overeating garbage, but people lack discipline.

Chicken, rice, beans, vegetables… all of these can be bought for less than the typical garbage most obese people eat, but “OMG… I have to actually COOK? That takes up too much energy, and time away from sitting idly in front of the TV”.

No one is being ‘force fed’ anything. People CHOOSE to eat like hogs, while simultaneously CHOOSING to be as lazy as possible.

I know more than a few keto cultists. “Carbs are da debbil!”.

Again; I’ve traveled a lot. In most Asian countries where the rates of obesity are FAR lower, the standard diet consists of getting the majority of their daily calories from carbs (rice, noodles, flatbreads etc.), because carbs are a lot cheaper than meat (and most Asian diets include a lot of vegetables as well).

It’s not the GMO wheat/soy making people fat. We don’t bother looking for non-GMO/organic/heirloom blah blah blah.

We’re not fat, simply through the basics of CICO. We stay active (way more active), and eat in moderation (OK, I eat a lot. I also engage in a lot more physical activity than normal, but if I’m unable to engage in my normal levels of physical activity, I cut my CI drastically, to compensate, knowing that I’m not burning the extra 1,000-2,000kcal).

None of this is as sexy as laying the blame for your lack of self control and willpower at the feet of Big X, whether it be Ag, Pharma, da gubmint…

This is America, Land of the Free, where the sweeping majority of us are free to choose to make the wrong choices every day.

Over and over again.

Another lazy either/or type comment. Big Ag has a LOT of the blame, but not all of it. Yes, individuals have to make better decisions. Big companies have to stop promoting and pushing unhealthy foods, the government has to stop subsidizing crap crops. Schools should be teaching basic nutrition to kids. But, I guess it's sexy to blame fatsos for all of it.

To be fair, I don't think you can take my pictures to be representative at all. I'm American and most of my pictures are from American restaurants. Nicer restaurants tend to have smaller portions. Sure, a lot of the daintier plates are from traveling, but that's because I go to high end restaurants when I travel. And you have to take into account that all of those small plates are being served at the same meal. If French people at like I did in France, they would be more obese than we are! At the end of the day it comes down to a mix of culture and choice. It's not just one or the other.
Lots of good points.

The two biggest things I noticed in many of the other countries I’ve traveled in with significantly lower rates of obesity;
- smaller meal/food portions in general
- people tend to walk a LOT more.

I found it pretty odd/sad when I first got a Garmin watch, that it would pop up a notice about the number of steps/activity level every day before my day was even halfway through, like it was some kind of laudable achievement. The first time, I thought, “Huh? Really? That’s pretty sad/pathetic, that the watch is programmed to popup a notice, like hitting this is something to be proud of”.

Now, I wonder if it sets different parameters when you first setup the watch, depending on whether it’s registered in the US, or EU/Asia.

I assure you that there’s nothing lazy about my statement. You can take it that way, if you choose, but it isn’t.

I’ve made personal decisions in my life to address the things we’re discussing. Probably stricter choices than most. What would you have me do? Inflict my choices on you? There are people in this country that will choose the wrong decision simply because you told them that they can’t. We see it every day.

I assure you that I probably agree with many of your positions. So much so that I’ve changed my entire life to combat these things. But, I’m pretty sure the very fabric of this country has created a cloth that runs in a direction counter to the degree of control you’re suggesting. I want more than anything for there to be accountability for these things, but I don’t for one moment believe that anyone else does.

My perspective on freedom is very different than that of the average American, right now. I think freedom is being able to choose to do whatever I want to do, but always choosing to do the right thing. Call me a morbidly idealistic optimist.

The right thing according to whom? Are we just talking about meal choices or are we branching into murdering bad people?

Today I was touching grass and beating trees.
And after that I went and just bought 1000 steaks and ate them all.
Honestly, I’m still kind of impressed by how easily K18 took that tree down. I didn’t even have time to really put much effort in and it was already on the ground.

It’s hornbeam, I think — super tough wood. You hit it and it feels like you’re striking stone.

I wonder, when this K18 came into the world, did he ever think he’d end up in this forest? I don’t know about him, but I’m happy about it.

I just walked almost 12 miles.
And stepped in poop twice.
Damn, I walk in the woods a lot, but so many paths are overgrown — hardly anyone uses them anymore — and the poop hides sneakily under the leaves.

How do you guys manage to avoid stepping in poop when walking in the forest?
