Random Thought Thread

It keeps the comments of "one just sold for x amount cheaper last week". I see its the norm here so I just follow suit. This is the only plus side I can think of.

Any a$$hole can still do that based only on the asking price in a listing before the knife is sold but I think that anyone who did so would get "banned" or at least "hand slapped" by the mods for doing so.

As for being the "norm," the practice of deleting the asking price from a listing is unfortunately becoming more common but it is NOT universal & this was NOT common practice when I joined BF around 8 yrs ago & it is rarely seen in older listings that I find when I do a search for prior sales of a particular knife model that I'm interested in buying

FWIW, the main reason to leave the asking price in the listing after a knife is sold is to provide a basis for valuing such knives now & in the future & I consider it a "public service" whenever a seller does NOT delete the ask from a listing after it is sold. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I never have & still don't understand why sellers on The Exchange find it necessary to delete the asking price from their listing after a knife is sold.

Sellers can mark the knife as SOLD & strikeout the asking price without deleting it &, besides, the asking price is NOT necessarily the price at which the knife was actually sold.

So, can anyone explain the reasoning for deleting the asking price from the listing entirely after selling a knife? 🤔

--------------------------------

I've never done it when I've sold a knife & never will because I don't see the point in doing that.

And, FWIW, I've negated the relevance of the possibility that a seller will delete the asking price from a listing for any knife that I've purchase on The Exchange by stating that "I'll take" a knife for the specific asking price. That way, even if the seller deletes the ask from his listing, the ask will still be evident in my "I'll take it" post that the seller cannot delete.

On the other hand, this strategy doesn't work for listings are are "closed" to posts & where the seller only allows offers by DM & were all negotiations take place privately.

So, the above doesn't work in all cases. 🤷‍♂️

The Exchange for sure. (Posting multiple times in a 24 hour period in a given category, failing to provide the timestamp or comply with the rules, not posting a complete price etc ad nauseum)

Posts in the wrong area of the site. (Including off-topic, China bashing, politics, etc etc etc)

Butthurt

Tanto Quantavious

On Fridays, there is a lot of gnashing of teeth by those with slow ISPs or who can't compete with those who allegedly use programs / bots to grab up the items listed in leisurely sales, especially if they buy for the purpose of flipping. (Above my pay grade. I don't know much about bots and programming.)

I'd bet that the use PayPal F&F causes a lot of the drama...

My wife does the China bashing in our household. Mostly over WeChat to her childhood friends still in China. :D

I don't think the OP is looking for answers as he's been around this Site for long enough to know the Site's policies regarding those issues. This poster, bless him, seems to have a few pet peeves of which venting about this issue is one of them.

Anyone sitting on a collection of knives which they may have to end up liquidating for various reasons, naturally wants to tap into reliable sources of information which includes most recent (sold) prices to get a more accurate gauge of their collection's perceived value. Even sites like eBay keep records of their past sales up to (IIRC) 90 days or thereabouts. There is a parasite type website (the name escapes me now) which claims to store past and expired info from eBay's older listings for a monthly subscription fee as there is no such thing as a free lunch to coin a phrase. AZCK keeps up their sold info for far longer than most in addition to some other smaller re-sellers but Forte Henry for instance, does to follow this practice. Many, many direct knife makers / sellers on IG and Facebook also erase their sold prices after sales are completed.

IMO, piling on recurrently about this practice on here will not change the Site owner's mind as I can understand their POV even if I don't personally tend to agree with 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was probably being a bit flippant since he has been a member a while and gloats on his collections and expertise. Anyone on here for even a month has seen threads about the topic with rehashing.
