Random Thought Thread

When I was a kid my dad developed billing systems for the phone companies. He had inside knowledge that it cost the phone company more to provide pulse dialing as opposed to tone, but they charged more for touch tone. So, out of principle we had pulse service for way longer than anyone I knew. Younger people probably don’t know but the land lines used to have a switch on the phone to select pulse or tone. We even had some of those phones with the rotary dial. I’m 48 by the way. I guess it was in a house built around 1900 with a lot of period furniture so in that setting I guess it could seem futuristic.

Sometimes the landline is the best option when the cell towers are down during a storm or other event. It's happened here in recent memory.
I was pretty impressed when reading about folks using the newer iPhones satcom capabilities in the aftermath of those nasty hurricanes through the Carolinas a couple(?) years back.

***one of the skiers used it in the recent avalanche tragedy, too.

This is what happens when you don’t stay abreast of local activities/actions;

“What is that? Shhh… quiet! Is that… a tornado siren? Didn’t think there was supposed to be shitty weather today”

Google search.
“Oh… apparently there’s a statewide tornado drill/test on 3/18 at 13:00. OK, lol”

I carry Critcal Duty in 9 mm and .40 because I like the polymer tip. It feeds reliably, groups well, and cold weather thick coats can mess with penetration/expansion significantly. Just a personal preference for where I live.
I'm a fan of critical defense and critical duty for this same reason.

I've seen some tests and done some of my own with federal hst and I think it's good, but over-hyped. I do run it because I can find it for less than the hornady criticals.

Honestly, I think if you go with any hp ammo from a reputable manufacturer, you'll be fine.

Edit:
There was another thread that went over 9mm defensive ammo. I posted some tests I saw on YouTube. The link to that thread and post is in the spoiler.

It is incredibly painful watching my boss trying to update a program. He’s also got instructions from IT. Also, he won’t stop right clicking on everything. He’s only 60 and I’m almost 42. So…very…painful.

I’ve not used computers for a very long time but still.

Here's an AI synopsis of some of the work that my friend Dr. Gary K. Roberts has produced on ammo testing. I was chatting with Gary yesterday during one of his brief idle moments. Solid dude on a variety of levels. Worth checking for synopses of his recommendations on various calibers. (May not all be up to date as he is massively busy with his surgical work.) I know from personal conversations that the Hornady Critical Duty ammo gets high marks as well, despite AI not mentioning below.

Nice. Yeah, I used his work as a reference, years ago.

P.S.
One consideration that made me pick HST over Gold Dot, is that HST has sealed primers and case mouths. Only specific Gold Dot variants have sealed case mouths.

Granted, not being some HSLD Operator swimming into a location, this isn’t exactly a necessity, but my thinking was, “They’re similar in price and performance. Might as well get the one that mitigates an additional issue/point of failure”.

He's a great guy and is very generous with his time and knowledge. I don't think he has as much free time for the testing these days due to work, and getting ready to retire in the next ten years or so. (Aside from his surgical work at Stanford, he has also been a reserve LEO.)
