So I’m not OVERLY well-traveled, but I’ve flown a fair amount for a poor boy. The first time I flew into/out of O’Hare was almost two decades ago and it was so chaotic that it became what I compared all other international airports to (eg “on a scale of one to O’Hare…”) I just flew through it again and had that same feeling of “this feels like barely channeled chaos.” Any well traveled guys want to confirm or deny a similar experience? Or was I just tainted all those years ago and can’t I see that first experience?
International man of mystery here (I carry 3 passports...).
I just got back from France to the DC area last night so I'll share a few experiences.
I think most airports can be a pain or breeze depending on when you go, where you are traveling to/from etc.
For example, I have stopped at O'Hare on a domestic flight with an hour stopover before connecting to St Louis (no checked luggage).
If the two gates are nearby in the same terminal it is the best possible case.
I have also arrived at O'Hare as my entry point to US from Europe and had to navigate customs and a connection in a different terminal.
Then you need to collect checked bags, pass customs, recheck bags etc. Much bigger pain.
If you are traveling internationally these days, it helps (in my experience) if your first flight is from a smaller airport.
Coming back from France yesterday was much easier going Rennes-->Paris-->DC, than it would have been if I took the train to Paris and made my first flight there. The long security lines can make you miss your flight.
The biggest international airports like CDG are at the point where you take-off and land in distant fields and get bused around between terminals, sometimes going through security again.
Covid changes flights in two ways. 1) You sit in a mask all day which sucks, and 2) the international flights were about 1/3 full, so most people had their own row of seats which is nice for a long flight. The domestic hops are still full.
