Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

Jay Fisher apparently did hear this from a maker ignorant, or dishonest, enough to say that...: www.Jayfisher.com

Quote: "I was shocked when I read on a knife maker's website that "Chromium prevents the steel from rusting but significantly degrades edge holding capabilities of the steel. All steels are composed of grains of the various alloying elements, the relatively large size of chromium results in a blade that will quickly dull and be very difficult to re-sharpen.""

--Bernard Levine, Levine's Guide to Knives, 1985"

There is a truth: hypereutectoid high Cr (>13%) ingot melting steels are inherently more difficult to sharpen than hypereutectoid ingot melting low Cr steels. Ingot melting technology generates relatively big Cr carbides.
Yet PM technonology has truly gone beyond this limitation.

Ankerson took a titanic effort to help all of us understanding the implications hidden in steel chemistry and -implicitly- HT bringing about different performances in the same controlled testing environment.
Results are here to be read.
In a phrase: there are reasons to use carbon steels as there are for stainless ones.
Long would it be the story and Ankie kindly asked to me yesterday not to hijack his own thread, so should you ask for more, please PM to me.

P.S.
440B BTW and FYI tipically has 5% M23C6 Cr carbides @56hrc, weaker than even M7C3 Cr carbides and in the 100-200nm range.
AEB-L would score tipically 5% of M7C3 (very fine) Cr based carbides @about 61-62HRC in the 50-100nm range. AEB-L is pretty much inexpensive, draw your own conclusions..

Added the S30V Michael Raymond Estrella Custom into the Coarse edge section. :)

60.5 - 61 RC and .006" behind the edge - 620 Cuts.
That's a very nice knife, and the first time I have ever heard of it.
Also, that's a lot of work to measure the cutting endurance of all these knives. Thank you for that.
How do you keep track? Do you use a click counter in the other hand, or do you just keep track in your head?

They got their monies worth out of this knife I can say that, these things aren't cheap.

Talking about money, mate, I do know you're not doing this to make your living, yet I feel compelled to ask you if you would accept a PP as a contribution for the whole worth you're bringing to me ;)
Feel free to PM to me.

All I have to do is count to 20. :D

I write everything down as I go. :)

Currently I don't have a primary job due to my injuries, but looking for something that I don't have to do any extensive manual labor or walking.

I do write for Knives Illustrated Magazine, I have my own Column and also do Feature Articles as requested.

I sincerely wish you to recover ASAP.
So, with even more reasons propelling my request, please PM to me or, should you feel it right and appropriate, post your PP handle here, please :) ;)

It's permanent, they can't do anything to make it better, the reason why I can't do that type of work anymore so I have no choice other than change careers.

It was a pride and an honour James, a droplet in the ocean, though :)

Yeah. :D

The interesting thing about this thread is that I never thought it would take off like it did when I 1st started it, I started it as an experiment and it just blew up.

It just kept getting bigger and bigger as I kept adding to it.

This isn't all that I do though testing wise, a lot of what I do isn't on the forums testing wise. :)

Well, you should put it all in a book, many many folks buy knives without literature coming from real world tests and knowledgeable people, as you.
So, thanks said from Daniele (myself) now has brought about a practical income for you, which is quite right as I gathered an income in terms of knife literature from your thread ;)

Time for dinner here in Italy..catch you later on the razor sharp lane, buddy

The book thing is a possibility in the future.

Thanks again Daniele. :)
