I don't give out numbers, everyone knows that, numbers are the devils playground...
The basic facts are that slicing cuts will dull the knife faster than push cutting because slicing cuts are a lot more abrasive to the edge.
That's as simple as I can make it.![]()
This formula seems strange to me, let me explain why.
When I play with my knife and I do few notch on wood, the part that I use to make the notch will dull more fast than the rest of the blade. The strange thing is ...the rest of the edge was been used more than the notch edge all the day long.
A good example from my experience of push cutting vs slicing cutting
So... more surface you have "use" & more longer the knife edge will take to become dull, because you have more resistance & endurance to the facts that you use more surface to dull....& viceversa.
This is my common sense from my Experience... not a fact![]()
Yeah but you can't slicing cut one piece of 1 inch of hard wood with the same easy that you would on manila rope....translates that in what...?Strange but true, slicing manila is Hell on a edge and more so than push cutting.
Hard wood is much more difficult to cut than manila rope, so... which one is more abrasive? with which cut..push cut or slicing?
they make cutting boards out of hard wood, it must not dull blades too much.
just because something is harder to cut through doesn't necessarily mean it's more abrasive. sticking your knife in the sand is easier than cutting hardwood, but the sand will kill the edge much faster than any wood will.
I cut hemp twine at work all day(mostly 2ply).how would you compare the abrasivness of hemp compared to manila?
Dear Ankerson,
Thank you for the fantastic unbiased hard work you have conducted and published for all of us. I have made changes in the way I purchase and even use my knives based on your results.
I wonder if you have done any work on BG42 aerospace bearing steel knives, and where would they fall in your opinion in the rankings.
Composition
---C - Cr- -- Mn-- Mo -- Si -- V
1.15 - 14.5 - 0.5 - 4 - - 0.3 - - 1.2
I would much appreciate your thoughts.
Thank you again for the best comparison published.
Cheers

Hey Jim,
I heard of a spyderco mule m390 coming in at 61+ wich is awesome. Any plans to test it out and see if it moves up a category?
Jim, I have one I can forward to you like the S35VN if there is interest and time at your end. Or not. Either way is fine.![]()
