Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

Thanks for that Joe. I can understand that toughness final hardness ect can all change depending on the HT but since chromium is the main element (I think?) that attributes to corrosion resistance, is some of the chromium lost during some heat treats or? Anyone please correct any of these statements. I'm a noob and only trying to learn.

It's not lost, it's still there percentage wise...

The difference is that more of the Chromium is pulled into developing carbides Percentage wise instead of being used for corrosion resistance.

So you lose some corrosion resistance in favor of higher wear resistance as a result.

This reminds me of zdp-189 ,with 3% c and 20% cr. This type of steel is a good example how the cr goes mostly to forming carbides.

Hey jim have you pondered the idea of testing a mora or 12c27 steel?

Probably not possible because of the scandi grind. But is 12c27 a possibility in the future?

Haven't considered it at all really, haven't seen any real higher quality knives in steels in that range.

Hi Jim. Great posts and great thread. (I use you in the search engine to find interesting old threads and information). But in your 1st post in this thread, back in 2010 you said you would you would update it as you did more tests. Any chance you could edit post 1 to include those additional tests? I've read all 1145 posts and come back to this thread periodically for new info but it would be really convenient to be able to simply return to post 1 and know that it reflected all your latest test results.

It is updated....

Well, Enzo and BHK have a couple of 12C27 models, BRKT has some as does Buck, Kershaw, Gerber, Boker, etc., but I don't how much you'd trust any of those... I think I've seen some pass though the Knifemakers' Exchange here as well...

what about benchmades new ht on cpm-m4 I've read some posts where people had them tested and they were pretty close to 64 and saw jdavis882 when he tested his contego and said it cut better than his manix with cpm-m4.

That wouldn't be too hard as the Manix 2 is pretty thick behind the edge.. ;)

I love this thread .........just wanted to say I still lerk and appreciate your knowledge Ankerson

Jim,
Thanks for all the effort involved in this. You may have answered this in the past but, who do you use and or recommend for HRC testing of blades?
Thanks...

Hi Jim, just a quick post to thank you for all the hard work you've done here. I have misplaced my old Benchmade ATS34 lock knife - it will turn up sometime no doubt - but being in the UK I seem to carry my UKPK in S30V all the time as we need to have a slip joint to do this (although I still prefer a proper locking blade for safety when I know I need to use the knife for heavy tasks). Anyway, I decided I would look for a decent replacement "user" since I cannot find my old workhorse and used your steel ratings to see what was available over here.

I ended up getting a Spyderco Bradley with an M4 blade and true to your tests there are 9 "5 star" ratings on the main stockist site over here from satisfied owners who all praise the blades edge holding. The number one category steels on your tests are all discontinued models - which seems a shame - but the Bradley is still current and it is at a sensible price. So many thanks for the hard work and guidance:thumbup:

jdavis did testing on his contego and found edge retention to be superior on the benchmade.

Ankerson if you'd like I can send you a Mini-griptilian in CPM-M4 once I get it back from Benchmade for HRC testing (if testing puts it at 63 or 64 hrc).
I am fully aware it could come back with nicks, or heavily used.

Also, I received the order of rope. That stuff is hard to cut so far it takes about 7~ slices and requires approximately 35 lbs.

Jim, what was the test knife for sg2? It should of done better if you look at the alloy content. I heard kershaw had some trouble with the heat treat on their laminate blades i.e. blur or JYD. The JYD has a thinner blade geometry and should hold an edge better in your testing. Just wondering, thanks for your input.
