Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

I gotta say sir, I'm on forums covering many many different subjects and the only other person I've seen that does anything comparable in terms of in-depth testing/ comparisons is HJK (who also happens to be a member here) and his battery/charger testing.

Thank you for keeping at this, it's became an immensely useful tool for all of us.

I am hoping to get one.

If not, I am sure someone will loan you one. I hope to grab one and would be willing to let you borrow it in the name of science. I know you are still recovering, but were you planning on doing the K390 Mule in the polished test? I don't recall if you own a K390 Mule or borrowed one. Would there be a Category 0, or would you just bump everything?

Patiently and excitedly waiting for the results.

I have a K390 Mule, with scales. :D

It would be way above the current Cat 1, so if I do test it with a polished edge I would have to put it in it's own category all by itself...

That and possibly the S110V Mule depending.... That's knowing how S110V is.....

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I really wish you'd let me send you my South Fork so we can see just what the difference is:

It's CPM S110V (sorry for the blurry pic--it helps if you squint...):

For the record, I have never had a knife that cuts like this one. In a word, it's amazing.

Now now, if we're mixing customs and production, I can think of a couple to add... ;) What are your favorite Mule scales? I need to get some.

I tested S110V in a few of his Customs.... :)

And I own one of his in S110V @ 65 RC, I doubt he will ever make another one that hard though.

I can think of one too. :D

My K294 Bow River at 64 RC.

Added Spyderco MT-18 in S110V to the Coarse edge testing. :)

Bottom of page 1 is the coarse edge testing.

NO, I am not back, it was a test to see if I could do it, had to take a lot of breaks due to the pain...

Will have to wait until I am better for more...

Are you surprised? I am not sure why, but I thought that it would be closer to K390. Sorry you are not fully healed. Take it easy, and thanks for sacrificing for us crazies to have the knowledge.

I really appreciate those test results, especially since Jim is playing hurt.

I thought the K390 and S110V would be closer, but then the S110V is softer. Maybe a lot softer. Jim shows the K390 at 62-64 HRc. I believe that the S110V mule is 60-61 HRc. So it's possible that Jim's test is comparing a K390 at 64 HRc to a S110V mule at 60 HRc. Switch those hardness values, and I'd expect the S110V edge to race into the lead.

I was surprised that Spyderco ran the S110V mule that soft. My K390 has really impressed me. It's like a self-propelled Honda going through cardboard. I haven't had a chance to test the S110V mule, but I thought it would be a good cutter. Mine came at 40 degrees inclusive, with a shoulder width of just 0.015.

Epic thread.

You will like the S110V Mule a lot, it cuts very well, the HT on it is awesome, dead spot on. :)

Sending the Mule off to get tested so I will know what it is hardness wise.
