Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

I see that M-2 is not on your list of steels here ..........
I dont expect you to test it , but where approx. do you think it would fall on the list ???

I just realized that BG-42 ends in the number 42, I have to wonder if that has subconsciously been steering me toward that steel type this whole time.
And if Latrobe originally picked that name for that reason, or was it just the only name appropriate for the steel?

The mysteries of the universe.

Neither,

He's saying there are no knives that meet the criteria necessary for proper testing. He explains what this is if you read the thread.

That's said its fairly certain its not going to be spectacular because its just not got enough alloying elements to form high hardness carbides necessary to be in the top bunch.

I understand that its probably one of your favourite steels, and that many traditional makers love it, but that won't make it 10V or K390... That said, it will still out perform many other steels in inexpensive production knives.

Finally as has been explained that pure cutting ability is as much (maybe more) about the grind, the angles and the blade thickness, than the steel itself. This only considers the steel and edge loss due to abrasive wear. There are many other ways a knife can go dull, and depending on your use those may be the deciding factor in edge retention for you.

Are you saying no one offered you a knife in 52100 to test? Or that no one makes a knife in 52100?

What I am saying is that there aren't any knives in 52100 that meet the specs that I need to test them, that is 4" to 5" blade that with a 1/8" spine thickness and around .025" behind the edge thickness, not coated and flat ground ideally.

That just not happening..... But don't expect a lot out of it if I ever do test one.

Other than Customs that is....

Well... I wasn't the only one that asked about 52100. Sorry I didn't feel like going back thru 80 pages of posts. I think some where on bladeforum someone did a similar test of steels and 52100 did very well. I know it's not the lates greatest steel but it is still supper in my book. JMO
