Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

Well... I wasn't the only one that asked about 52100. Sorry I didn't feel like going back thru 80 pages of posts. I think some where on bladeforum someone did a similar test of steels and 52100 did very well. I know it's not the lates greatest steel but it is still supper in my book. JMO

It is a good steel, but it just doesn't have the alloy content as it's a pretty simple carbon steel.

Very fine grained and tough.

That was pretty cryptic. Let me know if you want me to ship you my MT01 for T&E? I think I've got your addy, unless you've moved recently.

Are there any other Mule Team blades you'd like to test? I've got a Cobalt Special laminated blade that nobody seems to have much info on. I'd be willing to loan it if you think it'd be useful. I'm not so sure since it was a one-time run with little or no following.

Considering the review of the Knife Research Legion, I'd say it's a lot tougher CPM-D2.

Lower carbon and chrome should make it tougher. If it wears like D2 but it is tougher than it is doing pretty well. That is Cruwear/PD#1/Vascowear class as well which I find pretty nice in hard use folders. That is a useful class of steel if all you give up is some corrosion resistance.

I would never have guessed that my K390 Mule was that much better than my S110V Mule. I use the S110V a lot cutting cardboard and while I have trouble getting it hair popping sharp, it seems to cut much better over the long haul than my K390 Mule does. This just makes me think that the thinner S110V blade geometry cuts better than then thicker K390 blade geometry.

For some reason, I can get the K390 blade hair popping sharp without a problem.

My phil wilson SF in CPM 110v @ 63 has a course edge about 240-400 grit finish and it cuts for.......... ever. Nothing beats a course stoned edge for cutting!!!!

Definitely drool worthy, and it's nice to see Spyderco doesn't waste the potential of the steel by making it buttery soft at Rc 60 and below. It's a pity I don't really cut cardboard anymore, otherwise I would jump on it. As it stands, my folders typically haven't been sharpened in over 6 months:eek:.

Very good Job Jim! Thank you very much! It would be very interesting where a Benchmade 810 Contego with CPM-M4 @ 62-64HRC would take place in your ranking? ;-)

Oh wow did they really run the S110V in that guy at 62-63? That is very tempting now I just might need to get one sooner

That what Sal is saying. :)

Going to send it off for HRC testing after.

They do a good job.

Dunno, still have the GB I have to run coarse edge and it's 62.5 RC.
