Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

Hey Jim, I recently got one of the Spyderco PM2s in S90V/CPM154 clad and was wondering if you think it would be worthwhile to put through your tests? It doesn't feel that different from the 20CP PM2 I had but I haven't used it that much yet so can't make any definitive statements. In short, would you be willing to test out the S90V/CPM154 clad PM2 :D

Thanks!

Are you sure you want me to test that knife?

If it's a user I will run it. :)

Yeah of course! If I'm paying $500+ for a knife I'm not gonna just look at it :p Plus the edge you put on the 204P PM2 and B75P Mule are miles ahead of what I can manage on my Sharpmaker so that's a plus as well!

Already used it for some yardwork so I'll box it up and send it out tomorrow morning! I think I still have your address but if not I'll PM you

Sounds good. :)

I was fortunate enough to get a Jim Ankerson sharpened blade once too. :) They are really miles ahead of what I can do freehand in looks and even more so in performance. When done properly I have seen 50-55 degree inclusive edges shave like razors. When done with a proper edge on a nice high carbide steel a blade can be a scary thing.

This got me thinking, it'd be cool to see the difference a good proper sharpening can have on a knife's performance. Something like, one of Jim's edges compared to one put on by a carbide pull-through and then subjected to his tests. The only hard part would be finding someone willing to let their knife be the one sharpened by the pull-through :D

Hey, as long as he promised to fix it.

Can't wait to see the 810 full review, been eyeing these for some time, just have to decide if I would be happy selling a 710-2 in M4 to raise funds for it.

Come on Ankerson, you can't tell me that you wouldn't absolutely cringe at the sound of drawing such a neat blade through a carbide pull sharpener. :) hahaha. I'm thinking fingernails on a chalk board type cringing.

Yeah, just like that..... :D

I know a guy that swears by those things. He's definitely not a knife guy though. I watched as he ran what was a decent blade through one several times. The metal shavings that came off with each pass was what made me cringe. That poor knife is destined to have a short lifespan.

S90V - 460 - Military - 60 RC
S90V/CPM 154 - 460 - ? RC

So with them doing the same amount of cuts, is there anything that we can draw from this? I assume it means they are at pretty much the same hardness but with the CPM154 clad, will that affect the toughness/flexibility of the blade or anything?

I would say they are close hardness wise. :)

I doubt it will effect the toughness very much in a folder, I would just use it like you would a S90V knife. :)

The blade isn't ground to be flexible.

Added Cru-Wear, Custom Phil Wilson Bow River at 63 RC and .005" behind the edge. :)

That is sweet. You have to get the CRUWEAR Mili done now. Is that your Bow River or on loan?

Not mine, giving to the owner tomorrow. :)

The factory blade will do a lot less than that custom.....

Still debating on doing it, might sell it......

Cutting with the S110V Manix 2 reground now...... It's .005" behind the edge... Now.. ;)
