Ranking of Steels in Categories based on Edge Retention cutting 5/8" rope

I've got to ask since you have S30V listed at least twice, were any of those Benchmades, and if so did they fall into the Rockwell hardness category of 58.5, or 60?

RAT PACK # 1001
Nope, none of them.... :)
Just sent an inquiry about that to Kevin Walker at Benchmade. If/when I get an answer I will post it here for those that may be curious too.

Added S110V Manix 2 Regrind.

Hi Jim,

Looking back through to see if you addressed how the re-grind was done on the S110V Manix 2, and am not finding it. Were the flats reground all the way from spine to edge or was the blade thickness just thinned/feathered out behind the edge?

Always interested in your work--Thank you sir,
Will

It was reground professionally by a Custom knifemaker..... :)

Saved the Logo too. :)

Excellent--that helps a lot. That's the grind line just below the logo, angling upward toward the forward spine, right--and still flat ground from there to the edge? A true full re-grind--great job.

Thanks Jim--
Will

Exactly, and the other side is flat from spine to edge. :)

I am sure you requested that, but doesn't that technically give you an off-centered blade? Seems like a lot of people would be all up in arms over that, but you must not see it as a big deal.

Actually it's not off center, it all depends on how talented someone is. :)

I would love to see benchmade's cpm-m4 on the contego from 62-64 tested. My contego has flabberghasted me with edge retention.

Thanks for your continued efforts, Jim!
Seeing your Manix 2 S110 gain 50+ percent inspired me to grind away at my Gayle Bradley (didn't like the patina look mine had and never warmed to this knife so what the hay). I can't believe how effortlessly it now sails through material. Now I want all my knives reground professionally.
So much to learn. So expensive the process. : )

How did you regrind it? Did you just grind the hollows thinner and leave the flats or did you regrind the whole blade?

Added CPM S90V Benchmade 940-1, did very well as it's .018" behind the edge.... Thin blade grind out of the box.

Wow - substantially ahead of the S90V Para2 and Military. Is that just the thinner blade, or are there other things going on?

Edited the second line - got my question answered from your other post!

Although it shouldn't matter, out of curiosity, was the blade you tested marked First Production or a clean blade?

Thin blade geometry helps a lot, almost ..010" thinner behind the edge than the Military and Para 2.... And looks like the HT is dead freaking on, guessing on the higher end of the 59-61 BM says...

It's a clean blade, just got it today....

On the HT, yours could be 61, the next guy's could be 59...that's just life. :o :)

Yeah, they work in a range, that's why I listed it the way I did....

The 940-1 is a thin knife, it was only .012" behind the edge out of the box with the factory edge, reprofiled it to 15 DPS and it's .018" now, pretty thin for a production blade...

It's interesting you bring up the BM edges. I have always found the BM edges to be thinner than the Spyderco edges from the factory. The Benchmades I've used have always cut just as well or better than the Spydercos. By cutting well, I mean cutting with less effort. This is one reason I've liked Benchmade even though they do some interesting things with pricing and such.

True, the ones I have tested over the years have been thinner than most of what we usually see. :)
