Rare knives... a Conundrum!

Great idea, Mike.

With the upcoming Beer Scout run, I might be looking for a one-off in stag. :D

I would ask for a 98 Camp Knife in stag!

If they don't want to trade any of the Rendezvous knives, as others have commented, it doesn't seem like they want it back that badly.

For me the decision would be very simple because I like the 73 pattern and that is a rare jigging pattern . You have contacted them and gave them a chance and that was the right thing to do . The next move is theirs to make . It sounds to me like you have become attached to that knife and would really like to keep it. You have a heck of a Story Knife there my friend . You have a 73 = A Plus /// You have a rare handle pattern = A Plus //// You have a # 1 = A Plus .... I see no negatives for you .
KEEP IT !!!!

Harry

Put it up on the Exchange forum here for a hefty sum, or E-bay and see how much you can get, and use the proceeds to buy whatever you wanted.

You gave GEC first dibs. Seems fair enough.

John nailed it. I would email them one more time and just put it bluntly, either you want it back and will give me basically first dibs on a knife in the future of your choice or you really don't want it and either keep it to use or sell it off to buy what you want. They either want it or not and getting your choice of what you want is certainly reasonable for you to ask in your position.

Cue up the Italian music. I have a feeling that Charlie, the Godfather of knives, is going to make you an offer you can't refuse. (In a very good and generous way.)

Seems odd to me that this would be labelled to sell, with the 01 serial on the sticker if this wasn't to leave the shop. I would assume they would have taken it right to the showcase instead of deliberately packaging it for retail. Maybe I'm over thinking it.

GEC doesn't price them. The price was written on the knife by the dealer that was selling it.

What I'm potentially over thinking is that the guy I bought it from might have some other hidden gems! He has a massive collection of early GECs as if he was a dealer that never sold a thing! Maybe a brick and mortar store that didn't get much traffic? Regardless, I'm thinking this isn't the only special piece he had...

What would I do? Negotiate a fair exchange to get the knife back to GEC. I'd gladly give up the knife for a company who most agree does a lot of good for this community. However, what the OP or anyone else would do with their possession, their money, etc., is their decision and not for me to judge.

I dunno. Do you like the knife in and of itself?
If I liked the knife, I'd keep it.
If I didn't, I'd sell it.

I wouldn't be able to use it, therefore unable to keep it. I'd say take some catch and release pics to mount on the mantle. Then figure something out with GEC for what you have invested. Great story.

It looks like this has worked out just fine for you. I hope we get to know what you got for it. Congratulations :D

We shall see. Right now it looks like if it goes anywhere it will be to Charlie to do with as he pleases. Still could potentially be staying with me to have an heirloom to pass down as a 1-of-a-kind.

I have no opinion on what you do. I like to think I have an idea about what I would do.

But really, I just think it's cool that you asked the question.

Id send itback to gec with the proviso that i get first dibs on any other future knife they produce .value inconsequential.

To be frank GEC are well aware of the fact that they are catering to a specifically collector market. I see no reason that they should not have to pay in line with the consequences of that. Some of the responses here suggesting selling for cost or being gentlemanly, etc seem to ignore the fact that they are a company which is in the business of making profit, not a charity case. If they want it, they should be paying what the rest of the market, one which they have practically created, is willing to pay for a rare knife. No different than any other buyer.

I don't have any really rare knives but some are of limited production like this one. I'm saving these to pass down to my Grandson.

Gorgeous knife! I guess I should try to get this thread back on track. This wasn't intended to be about what the value should be (to GEC or anyone else), but more of a question of what you guys would do with something like this. My buddy put it best to me yesterday "The most valuable case knives, baseball cards, anything collectable are all factory errors. That knife is a collectors dream."

So let's say that Buck approached you and said that 110 was the only remaining one in good shape and they wanted it back for their own use. Would you consider sending it back to them (for any amount) or would you want it for yourself as an heirloom to eventually pass down to the kids/grandkids?

My personal thinking is that unless I can get something "1-off", I'd rather keep it as an heirloom. I would make an exception to the "no safe queens" policy I guess!
