Rare knives... a Conundrum!

There's quite a bit of discussion about value and flipping in this post.

You quoted a post where I specifically asked that the talk about what it is worth be stopped... I did talk about rarity and the fact that I did NOT buy this knife to sell or flip it, so I guess you're right, it was technically mentioned by me there. And I guess I did talk about the value of coins... maybe I should go back and delete that.

The only questions I'm asking is if the members here would keep it, sell it, or try to work on a way to get it back to GEC (whether donating or trading etc) if they were in my shoes. Not once (at least to my recollection) have I asked for any values or bids.

Apparently everyone else understands the point of this thread as well because I have only received 2 messages asking about selling it or trading it. And 1 of those was trying to help get this back to GEC as a nice gesture for Bill. I'm not sure what your intention is here, but I would prefer for this to stay here and not be moved to GBU, because these are the opinions I am looking for. And considering at least a couple moderators have posted here, I have to assume they agree.

I'm done talking about this because I would rather not derail the thread further. If you would like to continue the discussion for whatever reason, feel free to PM me. Otherwise, let's keep it on the topic at hand.

I like your idea of something of equal rarity, the caveat being you originally indicated a desire for a user, non-safe queen. If your thoughts in that direction have changed, if you do now want a safe queen-get one, from GEC, a 3rd party, or by releasing it into the wild. Kinda the same idea if you want a user(s). You are in one of those very rare positions to actually get whatever you may want, within the limits of knife collecting anyways. Don't rush, and be sure of what you do. Even if you do nothing at this point, you would still have the knife, who's desirability should only increase.
Thanks, Neal70

I don't have an issue with using a 1-off... I carry the customs I own and had no problem carrying a prototype 99 Wallstreet from gec. That was what was so weird about this one. I used it plenty (lightly) before I found out the rarity.

I carry 2 knives on me at all times. 1 to "abuse" so to speak with tougher tasks and another to fondle or use on light work. I rotate out what I'm carrying at least once or twice a week. There are a few that have more patina than others that definitely spend the bulk of the time on my pocket though, but nothing is really off limits.

I'm not really sure what it is about this one. Maybe once I let this mellow for a while, I'll be fine with carrying it again or maybe it will just get parked in the safe...

Well, like I said , I don't think taking your time figgerin' this one out will do you any harm...just as rare tomorrow or next year, you just don't want to have regrets over the way things workout. Although honestly, my guess is you'll feel some regret or wonder over what might have been , no matter which way you go. Still a nice place to be(heh heh).

To be really honest, I would love to have a chat to Bill, then pull that knife out of MY pocket and gift it to him.

He has worked with Charlie and been really kind to him, and no doubt countless others, Charlie has then been so extremely generous to a lot more others, so I doubt anyone thinks of actually giving Bill a knife - always expecting him to gift the knife being the Chief of GEC.

I would probably like to get it back to GEC somehow if I had it.

But then again how special will this knife be when it's 100 years old and still out in the wild?!

Good luck sir.

I would also want to get it back to GEC. However, I would be slightly insulted if they offered me something of lesser value.
I get the impression that they don't want it back all that badly. If they are not even willing to trade you a rendezvous knife, then they must be somewhat ok with leaving it in the wild. I might even venture to say that this is not the only #1 that has slipped through the cracks. If this was the only knife missing from their entire collection then I could see them bending over backwards to get it back.
Unless Charlie makes you a decent offer(I would expect nothing less) or Bill has a change of heart I would just move on to either carrying it or selling it.
This has been a really interesting thread. Thanks for posting it.

Don't forget to keep us posted on what you decide to do, unless you don't want to hear all the comments about how everyone would've done differently;) Good luck man.
Thanks, Neal70

Word came back from the Rendezvous that Bill wasn't very interested in getting the knife back, so it looks like this one will definitely be staying with me. If GEC continues to grow in popularity, this will be a really cool piece to have tucked away!

You did all the right things, solicited opinions, offered it to GEC, they obviously don't seem that bothered, wanted to use it but find yourself in a dilemma, know that it has good value.

It's also a very nice looking knife.

But I have suggestions as to the rarity value.....let's make it rarer still :D:D Send it to Glenn to have the secondary blade removed then it's one of one of a really rare kind  He has form in this dept. I sent him my 2 blade stainless 73 (not 01 but it's A1 now) and he did a great job on tackling its obesity issue.

Like it a lot, and it's rare:D

I would probably see if Mr. Howard would like it back. If not, I'd definitely keep it. I'd probably use it, but that's just me.

That's the plan! Bill made my decision much easier by indicating he doesn't want it back. I'll probably limit it to being carried in a sheath just to ensure the serial number stays visible. It is a very light engraving. One thing Charlie did relay back to me is that it's the only 73 series that they did a 2-digit serial number. From what I can tell, they did a club knife with these covers and then a run of 25 with the mason etch and must have had 7 sets left over for this "pattern production finale".

At one time I had the 3 different "PPF" knives. Tidioute was in charcoal water buffalo bone, Northfield in red water buffalo bone, and this one. I gave the charcoal to my brother and traded the red one to a knife knut buddy. And Bill decided to end the "PPF" etch after the 73s in 2007.

An earlier thread discussing serial numbers and their significance revealed to me that I apparently have a much rarer knife than originally thought! I grabbed a Serial #1 knife off an auction site a while back, mainly because I loved the covers and thought the serial number was cool. Little did I know that GEC keeps that knife typically and Christine can't figure out how this one left the factory!

So now the question is this... what would you guys do with a knife like this? I'm typically the type that uses EVERYTHING I own (and this one has been lightly carried and used). I make it a point to NOT have safe queens, but this one has me in a bind... Even moreso than the few customs I own! I have no issues throwing my Davison in my pocket and opening boxes or using it occasionally on a house frame to trim splinters or the like... for some reason, this one feels different.

So what would you do? I'm not looking for values or anything like that here. Let's keep it within the rules! But if you were me, would you hold onto this one and just be excited to have a "factory mistake" that snuck out? Would you try to maximize $$ for it while GEC popularity is so high ? Would you trade/sell it back to GEC (the Rendezvous knives are hot off the presses...)? All opinions welcomed!

I'm hip to this.
