Rare knives... a Conundrum!

I have given away lots of knives thru the yrs.. I would DONATE it back to GEC and expect nothing in return... But... That's just me!!! :) John

If CJ Buck contacted me and really wanted to buy it back, I'd sell it back. Has GEC contacted you? Sorry if my sense of humor messes up the thread, if so someone please let me know.:o I'm sorta new to this sub forum and hope to be a regular here.
Those that know me, know how I like to have fun sometimes.

Not at all. Your sense of humor wasn't what I was getting back on track. It was the specific talk of what the knife is worth or that kind of talk that will get the thread closed. Humor is always appreciated! And Danny Trejo can make an appearance in any thread I start!

I've "talked" with GEC via email and sent them pictures of the knife. What I'm struggling with is that I'm finding out I'm not as generous as some here and am having trouble coming to terms with "donating" it or just getting my investment back. I don't consider myself a greedy person, but what was originally a cool knife in my collection got MUCH cooler here recently and I'll have a hard time giving it up. It would be much easier if I had simply bought the knife to sell/flip it, but I tracked down this knife because I wanted THIS KNIFE. The serial number just makes it even rarer than it was before. It went from being 1 of 7 made to 1 of Thousands in rarity because it is apparently the only one of it's kind in circulation.

It's like owning a very rare mis-struck coin from years ago. If the US mint came to you and asked for the coin back, would you take it? Or would you make sure you got market value or an equal replacement for it? I know we all love GEC knives and what they are bringing to the market. But put this question on anything else and maybe my point/question is clearer. You may have bought this very rare coin for a few bucks and it is worth thousands. If the US mint offered to give you the few bucks back so they could put the coin in a museum, would you take the offer or politely pass? There is no wrong answer I suppose, just getting opinions from others because that is what the forums are for right?

I feel you're already doing the right thing by having concern over a decision such as this.

As far as monetary value, no GEC goes unnoticed on popular sites, so its probably worth what you paid.

As far as TRUE value, please consider that your users, the knives that your kids/grandkids see you use, and see the imperfect evidence of hard work and practical versatility worn into...those will be priceless to them.

EXCELLENT point!

I am the type of guy that would throw a record setting home run baseball lucky enough to be cuaght back into the field for the batter to keep. So I would likely send this back to GEC and hope (not expect) something back in return. I can see either side of the argument here. Not sure there is much middle ground, unless GEC would create an analogue of it for JFowl31 to continue using, perhaps with some documentation authorized by GEC of the situation.

You're right Jfowl, there is no wrong answer. I find it noble that you are concerned. In the words of my missed Father, " every choice in life is a trade off "

Kind of a side note, Buck had a collection on display of some of the very first knives Hoyt Buck made in his shed out back, Also some of the first Son Al's knives made before he died. I believe it was when they were located in California, someone broke into the display and stole several of them. I'm sorta surprised GEC didn't just not sell the first of's if they wanted to make a historical collection.

I give you credit for contacting GEC. I'm not sure I would have bothered. Anyway, the ball is in their court.

If it were me I'd carry it if I liked it. I'd sell it or put it away for posterity if I didn't.

......I would make an exception to the "no safe queens" policy I guess!

I think it was the "no safe queen" policy that was the motivation of all of this. If you did not want to keep it at the state it is then its better to get something you would be happy using the heck out of. If you are willing to let it see only light duty or no duty to save it as an heirloom that is totally different. In that case I would keep it! You love the knife, keep it.

Sounds like GEC made an offer of a knife that was not that favorable to the OP and would not do a Rendevous knife in trade either. I think they 're not that interested so I would either keep it or trade his very special knife to another GEC collector who does have something special he does want.

If a knife is rare then there's usually little demand for it. Folks don't know about it, it may be difficult to find a buyer for it, and since there's no demand the price people will pay may not be very high.

Some folks will try to generate awareness and interest by discussion on a forum. It may also elicit offers. That may or may not be your intention. It is quite common though.

In my opinion, this topic might be better suited for GBU. Just a suggestion.

It is a very nice looking knife. The bone is superb. It is a model you hunted for and it is unique.

Keep it. :)

If GEC doesn't make you an offer you're happy with, keep it. Just know that down the line if you ever want to sell it it's worth a lot more than GEC offered you. Some collectors would go nuts for something like that.

In a perfect world that's what I would do. But business is business and mistakes cost money.

I would argue that his chances of selling high are probably best now that this topic is on the first page. I do think there are folks who would find additional value in it. Personally, I would trade for another knife from GEC since Bill hadn't intended to sell it.

If I understand correctly, this forum is supposed to be for discussing the knives. Discussions about flipping usually get moved to GBU.

Agreed. So please stop discussing when the value is the highest etc. Only 1 person has this knife and the intention has nothing to do with flipping it. I believe I've made that clear.

On this page, you are the only one discussing flipping it or soliciting bids etc. Everyone else seems to understand what the topic is about.

But I welcome your thoughts on my original question if you would like to add to the discussion rather than try to get this moved to GBU.

There's quite a bit of discussion about value and flipping in this post.
