RAT Fire kit ....WOW !

Firestraws. Take a regular drinking straw and melt one end shut. Cut to length, and fill with fatwood dust, or other ground type of tinder, and seal the other end. Keeps it sealed and easier to manage then just filling the whole capsule with powder. You then cut off an end and squueze out the contents into your tinder and spark with steel. Really helps when your tinder is damp, or not taking spark easy.

With these misch metal rods, I dont think that will be a problem. If you can get a chunk on the tnder, It will burn. No question.
 
Thanks for the firestraw info. I believe people also use this method of carry for bleach to use as water treatment. I've never done it myself but I do like the idea as a way to keep tinder dry and separate from other stuff in your kit.
 
Got my firekit today. Stout little thing. Could work for self-defense in a pinch. I'm liking the misch metal better the more I use it, can get a spark very quickly with the awl on my SAK now.

I have a small amber glass vial that holds 20 potable aqua tablets that will fit in the fire kit. The only problem is, that with the liquid filled button compass I have now, it won't fit by just a tiny bit. I am hoping that the dry button compass is a hair thinnner. You can find one here:

That is bigger than I first thought they were, but still looks like an excellent piece of gear and I need a couple.
