RAT Fire Kit

Super nifty! I too vote to scrap the magnesium rod, though, and just go with a 3/16" ferro rod. I'm just not a big fan of magnesium, it never really did that much for me. Otherwise, love the design concept! If that capsule will fit just one or two PJ cotton balls, it's a lifesaver.

Edit: Whoops, I somehow totally missed the second page. I too like the idea of a steel striker cap with a dummy-cord groove. Excellent suggestion!

Jeff,

One other consideration. Don't put a lanyard hole around the top of the cap since it can wiggle and unscrew if dangled. Can a lanyard hole be placed lower down or somewhere on the main body of the unit instead? I wouldn't want a user to have just a cap when the chips are down.

I agree 100%. I don't know how many Mag Solitaires I had that unscrewed from the keyring base.

how about 1/2'' ferro rod and make the capsule out of magnesium that way everybody is happy.

Nah - Then you would end up scraping through the capsule. I would be happy with the original (preferably with more flint and less mag) or just a big flint.

The best change I've seen so far is incorporating a striker as the capsule lid.

I've made a couple on a similar idea with flint bars and plastic capsule tops, and seen others here do it with spy capsules.

This design looks a winner.

Personally, I'm all for doing away with the magnesium rod altogether and going with a 3/16" diameter ferro rod instead. Brings the price down

I couldn't agree with you more, I don't like using mag anyhow, if you guys make with just the ferro rod I'll be all over it, need to make a small carbon striker/knife to go with it too

AWESOME IDEA. The tinder capsule looks awfully small to me I suppose it could be filled with magnesium shavings or sawdust maybe? Is it big enough to hold a couple of cotton balls?

Cool, someone else thought of it also. The idea just makes sense.

I just sent nick-nack a message about this. Most likely his idea pre-dates ours since his prototype was made before ours according to the posting dates (so it just stands to reason that thought popped in his mind before it did ours). The last thing we want to do is step on anyone's intellectual property, especially with everything that has happened (and is happening) to us right now with the fight for our name. So, I emailed nick-nack asking for his blessings on us going forward with manufacturing this. If he doesn't want us to, then we won't.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, HornyToad. Regardless of what happens it is a cool idea.

Completely agree. Lose the magnesium and increase the ferro rod length and diameter. If that happens I'l take six.

I'll add my voice to dumping the magnesium. I've always found the ferro rod to be the star of the show. I wouldn't mind seeing the tinder case a wee bit bigger though.

I'm with those wanting a ferro rod that would fit loops in sheaths. Hard anodized aluminum for the capsule handle would be great to resist scratching. I'm certainly in for a few of them to go with my RAT knives.

That bit of kit looks awesome. I hope you get the go ahead on manufacturing it. I'll take a handful or so for presents and to put in my various kits. Any chance of some type of marker, tritium maybe, that would make it east to find wen it's pitch black?

No ill thoughts intended. I didn't know who the various players were. Great idea. Send Nick Nack an Izula and I am sure he would be glad to give his blessing. I can't wait to get one in OD green myself. :D

I'm with ya on the 3/16 ferro rod it would make for a slick setup, please by all means go forward with this project...THANKS!

I agree..so send me that defunct prototype...we dont want anyone getting the wrong idea about RAT, now do we? Gene
