RAT For Urban Survival?

Don't forget the hang glider to get out of high buildings. And a HEST.

Knife laws are pretty lax here so I am not too worried about size limit in a survival situation. I'd go with he RC-5. I carry 2 mini pry bars but have no doubt the RC-5 could pry with ease.

On the topic of prying with our survival knife... Would your knife be your dedicated pry bar (as well as knife of course) in such a situation as you wouldn't want to carry a separate pry bar? Or would the knife simply be an emergency back up pry bar? And what do you realistically see yourself prying open?

We have all made a ton of videos chopping, crafting, etc... with our knives... I'll have to see if there are any videos out there testing a knife as a pry bar.

My RC-5 all the way! If I'm having to worry about blade laws then my HEST.

Because of the size, shape, design, thickness, and ease of discretion I chose a couple of HESTs for urban carry.

Quick answer H.E.S.T.
Yet, "Urban Survival" can be more dangerous than wilderness survival. In the city, one could be avoiding the crowds, fires, gunshots, flooding, and I could go on and on. So, it's hard to say what you might encounter.
Does seem like a gun, a prybar, a blade or two, flashlight, and luck would be the basic necessities. If you stay in the city, you could acquire more tools, food, etc..
If your plan is to leave then you gotta think about wilderness survival as well.

Well I live and have always lived in huge urban environments, and I typically carry an Izula and a SAK, depending on where I'm going. A 5 would be great, if it were legal, but do I even need it? There are a lot of things you can find in a city that could be used as a pry bar, if need be. There are a lot of things you could pick up and throw into a car window. That's not a perfect answer because sometimes what you have at hand is all there is, but carrying around a gigantic knife that happens to double as a prybar/glassbreaker/broadsword is not really feasible. If I had to choose between the Izula and the SAK I'd probably take the SAK, just for the ability to tinker with machines and electronics. And hey, if it worked for MacGyver...

And also, if I carried around my ESEE 4 I might wind up in a situation where I had as Ricky Riccardo would say, "A lot of 'splainin to do!" It just doesn't look remotely close to legal size in the cities I spend most of my time in. It is a tool for the great outdoors, or stuff around the house, for me. Of course I would prefer to have it, along with a few other things, if the "SHTF"...but that might not be an option.

RC4 is my EDC everyday around town. Horizontal across the back. Abggy sweater, shirt or jacket keeps it out of site. The sme could probably be done with the RC5 in the new sheath. Haven't been able to try that out as mine came in the eagle sheath.

+1 on the pry bar, but I have known a couple bona fide carpenters who were actualy arrested for possesion of burglary tools due to their having them in the trunk of their car, and that was even with the tool belts and other equipment in the trunk. There are some real jackass cops out there.

How did the cops get in the trunk of their car in the first place.

I can't speak for Mike but I know of similar situations where people get searched because they show up for work early and it's dark and they get scoped out. There is also the common traffic stop and if people consent to the search, and they search, some people just don't listen to explanations very well.

In communities with new construction, theft is always a problem. That then morphs into, who are these people? How do you prove you belong there, etc.?

The problem with laws about carrying any kind of tool, even guns and knives, is there shouldn't be any. It should be illegal to have a knife you have stuck into someone else in an illegal manner or in the case of a firearm, have shot and injured or killed or robbed someone in a non self-defense situation, etc.

That's the way it used to be in this country until we became ban happy about everything. The authorities needed to establish what happened at any given situation.

A prybar, and many other tools, simply possessing one without actively sticking it into something you don't have a right to stick it into, shouldn't be a crime at all.

Don, are you saying that the government does NOT know what is best for us? ;)

I guess you ought to say it while you still can.

You are correct on both counts.

I'm just waiting for some islamic dingbat to stick something in his colon so I can see everyone justify the TSA going up people's taterholes to inspect that, too.

2 machetes strapped across your back, A junglas in your waist band and a special vest with two dozen DPx HESTs and an Izula in each shoe.

AS much as I love the 5, I'll have to say the HEST and a multitool. Actually the multitool can be replaced by a pair of pliers and a big strong sawing needle. If you're bugging out, I doubt you'll need much more
