Received my R2D2 today and boy is it slick and I mean that in the dual sense ! Great knife as are my other rats but my gosh the carbon fiber is slippery.

In hindsight, would you have rather saved the extra $10-$12 spent for CF and bought FRN instead or was the bling worth it?

Never had CF before on any knife and have no problem with the standard scales. If this is a common condition of CF then I'd have to think hard about it.

Nothing like waking up and getting an olive drab R2D2 as a present from your kids! Slid it into my pocket and went work with a smile!

I bought the C/F and black and from experience The C/F is fine but I wish it was the O/D I originally wanted. In normal use it's not to slick but if you had oil or fish slime on your hands, I'm sure it would be to slick.
To answer your question I would rather have saved the $10-$12 and got the FRN. I kept the C/F but went back and ordered the O/D.

Waiting for these to become available in Canada, but I fear with the new list of prohibited knives the CBSA drew up, that might never happen. :-(

I hope it can be reversed for you and all our friends up north. IMHO, with the D2 steel, it's one of the the best buys in pocket knives.

Yeah, I've heard nothing but good things about the R2D2. I prefer its smaller size to the R1, but worst case Ontario, er, scenario, I suppose I could spring for an R1D2.

I was also eyeing the D2 Steel Will Cutjacks, but I just like the design of the RAT better.

I have both the Rat2 and the Steel Will Cutjack Mini in d2.
I prefer the cutjack for edc. The action is excellent and the blade profile is great. I especially like the option to choke up on that finger choil.

That said... my Rat2 is a long time favorite. Nothing wrong with the knife, I just think the Cutjack brings a lot more to the table.

I just bought four more of these as gifts for some coworkers. Seriously such an incredible value.

Related: I was handling my RAT model 1 amd sharpened it up. Man, that thing feels HUGE compared to the pocket friendly model 2! Not sure which one I like better, as I remember really enjoying carrying the 1, but now I really enjoy carrying the 2.

Finally pulled the trigger on one of these. My first Rat II. Never had a Rat I either.

carried for about a week now and i've noticed 2 small issues:
-I've owned 3 rat 2s (2 aus8, 1 d2)and they've all had late lockups. the ball almost hits the other liner. still functions fine i'd just like it to be a little earlier so it could have more room to wear a groove after time.. if that makes sense.
-I didnt notice with my aus8 rats.. but the tip of the blade on my d2 is almost flush with the scale when it's closed.. if i run my finger along the edge i can feel the point. again shouldn't ever be a real issue but if the blade was a few hundredths shorter it would fix it.

other than that.. it really is a great EDC knife and everything good already said about the rat 2 is true. one thing better about my d2 rat (not sure if this is typical or i just got lucky) is how smooth it is.. usually first thing i do when i get a new knife is disassemble, clean and lube.. but i'm not touching this one. it almost drops shut which is crazy for such a light blade. a slight jiggle closes the blade and rolling it out feels so nice.

nice work okc

I've had my Rat 2 D2 in my pocket since it arrived a few days ago. Now I understand why these are so popular.
The action is really good. Very smooth with a positive detent. Flicks open easily. Cuts well. Slides into the pocket easily.
The nylon scales are a bit slick but not terrible. The lockup is late but it doesn't really concern me on a low-dollar knife. Lockup is solid. If a problem ever emerges I'm sure Ontario would take care of it.

Can anyone verify by testing what rockwell the R2D2 is coming in at? From memory, I recall OKC reported R1D2 was between 58-60, but Knifeworks is reporting the R2D2 at 62-64 which would be interesting to play with if that specification is true. I love Benchmade's D2 60+62.

Iirc someone said it was 58hrc. Doubtful it's higher than 60. But I haven't had one tested at all.
