hey Jeff, on the water crossing ? why is it you cross away from the rope & not on the other side of the rope ,if you fell/slipped you'd be swept away from the guide rope not towards it ? I was just wondering...I dont know anything about water crossing except dont fall down, reason I asked a question....

Pictures like this make me wish you guys would make RAT survival instructional dvd's from these courses you have...step by step, just like we are actually there...i know its fairy tale but still, one can dream. It would be super cool though.

I was always taught to cross on the downriver side of a rope (hand line). Can't remember the exact reason but here are some points to think about: if you were to slip and grab the rope with both hands then you would be facing down river if you were crossing on the upriver side. Always better to be facing upriver when crossing. Especially in a fast moving river that may have debris. Next thing is if something happens, the rope could cause you more harm by holding you under or pinning you whereas if you are on the downriver side, you simply release and you're not tangled.

Just out of curiosity, do you ever get any women in your classes, or is it all men?

Every so often we will get a woman and they usually do much better than the men in our classes. Seriously.

 Thanks, like I said I did not know is to why I asked :D
thanks for your input bro

I remember seeing an article about this for some SARs outfit, and I think they said that went you are on the upstream side of the rope, and you fall, there is a highly likelihood of your wrist getting wrapped in the rope, causing you to be pinned. Something like that.. what Jeff's said makes a lot of sense too.

Is the machete picture with the blue handle the new condor 1095 steel machete?

Couldn't tell you. I barely even studied the various knives/machetes being used. As bad as this may sound for someone who has a forum on BFs, knives just don't interest me that much. They are simply a means to an end. I don't really know what's new or who's making what in the market since I view all knives as tools and nothing more. The same with almost any other gear as well. It either works or it doesn't. I guess that is what separates Mike and I from other manufacturers. You can talk to many of them at a show such as SHOT and they know every new-fangled steel and design out, and who's doing what...and they actually get excited about it like a kid at Christmas. All the while I'm pretending to enjoy the conversation while looking past the talker to some hot chick walking by. If you really want to have a boring dinner, then go out with a bunch of knife manufacturers, reps and gear queers at a large show. They literally live and breathe this junk! :D

Looks like the stainless Condor "El Salvador" model. The carbon ones have black handles. ;)

Jeff two thumbs up Great pics! When in North ME,N.H,VT. ??????
Thanks for the pics,Man looks like a great time!

I actually enjoy the shows since there are a lot of folks like us there that also know the industry is bullshit, so we have fun making fun....and looking at the women. :D

I saw you at a booth......staring off into the distance. I was going to say hi, but did not want to break your meditation. But then, I was drunk. :D

I was too!!! Who could tolerate such a macho affair without alcohol?

When I went down into the "pit" at the Regency where the bars with $6 beers were set up, all I could hear were the clicks and snicks of switchblades popping open in a cacophony like some kind of metallic insect swarm. Ten thousand drunk mostly white folks talking and flicking their blades. The help looked nervous. I knew right then I had picked the wrong place to peddle my choppers and bowies. So I just left them in the bag and drank and talked trash to any woman who could stand me for more than five minutes. It was good to get out and about for this old swamper.
