Raymond Richard dagger blank WIP

Hi Lorien, It's a nice looking knife, great job. One thing bugs me though, and this may just be a personal thing. Everything else on the handle is an oval except the butt, it's square. Please excuse the critique if you weren't looking for one. Sometimes we don't see things like that when we're too close to the project, that said, it's your knife, you get to build it however you want. Nice knife, thanks for showing it, are you making a sheath for it?

Mark, Looks to me like the butt has got a couple radius's. Both slight but there there.

Good looking knife Lorien, way to go!! Looks like the fit is good and the design nice design work came through too.

no problem Mark, and I appreciate your thoughts. I just thought it was hip to be square:D. Actually, the butt of the handle being the shape that it is gives a good purchase for one's thumb. I can stab this knife most of the way through a phone book, and I haven't put the final edge on it yet:eek: Tres stabby!

There are a great many small, (and some slightly larger:o) imperfections, but overall I'm quite pleased with how she turned out. Here's a picture of the knife pretty much all done;

I will be making a sheath for this knife, but I haven't decided how to approach it yet. Was thinking of doing some kind of shoulder rig, but maybe I'll just keep it simple.

Huge thanks to Ray! Putting this knife together provided a great education, and really solidified my desire to continue making knives:cool:.

I missed this some how way back and came back to it again after our discussion today. Agian, very nice work, both yours and Ray's

That really turned out great Lorien! You have really come a long way in a short time, keeps me pressing on. Thanks for the insperation!

sweet! Thanks guys.
I won't consider this knife done til I've made a sheath. Too much stuff on the go! But soon...

I did consider that possibility Peter, but my leathworking skills are definitely more developed than my woodworking skills. Not that that's saying much, but:o
For this knife, a matching wooden scabbard would be cool, and I was thinking about it like I said. But I don't have a large enough piece of cocobolo to do it, and besides I'm done working with that stuff, it's nasty.
I haven't tried dyeing leather before, and I'm going to look into it a little bit, instead of my standard bee's waxed veg tan sheaths.
It might be cool to make a little copper tip for the sheath...

Lorien,
Great stuff. I am a big fan of copper too and you tackled some tough fitting here, nice work it came out beautiful.
Eric

thank you very much, Eric. I appreciate you saying so:)

Nice work Lorien. Lovely little dagger. Its always fun to see how other minds problem solve differntly. Coco is by far my favorite wood. It knocks my brother Kerry on his butt, but doesnt effect me much at all....yet.

sorry to resurrect this old thread, but to be fair it was a WIP thread and now that the sheath is made, this process is complete.

While this sheath ain't a beauty queen, it is quite serviceable and I learned some new skills in making it. It is the first sheath I made using a drill press to make the holes for the stitching to go through and the quality is quite a lot better than past efforts. The thing I'm most pleased about is the retention of this sheath in that the knife 'clicks' solidly into place and the sheath holds onto the knife really well once it is in there. Kinda like kydex, but in leather.

The leather is around 10oz and is treated with a mixture of pure bee's wax and parrafin wax. Usually I'd use straight up Snoseal, but I didn't have any and this concoction seems to work pretty well.

Thank you very much for following along. Making this blank into a serviceable knife was a real joy, and I will really miss it when it's gone.

Nice work Lorien! That turned out really well. I guess I missed where you said you're selling it. That's a shame but also congratulations. It's hard to let'em go but it's a great motivation to make more.

Someday you can head out here and forge yourself another dagger.

thank you Stu. I WILL take you up on your offer!
I didn't say I was selling it!

thanks very much bigfatty, I'm flattered man.
