It seems there are so many people looking for that "One Knife Do All" blade. A couple of months ago I had the chance to see the RC-3 in real world use. It was used for cutting vines in shelter construction, meat, cord and even fingers. One of the guys used it to skin a deer. I saw one of the instructors use it to make notches in the logs we were making rafts out of. He used a grip toward the end of the handle to increase the length of the knife and made some quick short chops to notch the diameter of the log to accept a firm place to tie the cord around. When it comes to that "One Knife Do All" you will always give up something. I always try to find the knives/tools suited for the terrain I am visiting. A knife that can be used for most of the work. This was a "One Knife Do Most".

Here is the RC-3

Specs:
Overall length: 8 5/16"
Cutting Edge length: 3 3/8"
Blade Length (end of handle to tip of knife): 3 7/8"
Maximum thickness: 1/8".
Weight: 5.2 ounces (knife only), 9.3 ounces (knife and sheath

My knife requirements may be different from a fisherman or hunter. I look at shelter and fire to be up there with survival priorities. I want to be able to baton wet or muddy wood to get to the dry inside. Once I can get to the dry inside it is important to be able to make wood shavings for a fire. This may be done while wet and shivering from cold or panic so my knife must have a good grip or decent guard to protect from getting cut due to slipping.

Here are some pictures of my knife requirements.

Splitting.

When trying to split a larger piece of wood with a small blade you can baton the back of the handle if it has a full tang and nice flat spine.

Using a piece of wood to hammer the tip.

The split. Small pieces at a time.

Now for some shaving. Full flat grind will do it!

Combos

A good wilderness/Desert combo.

A good wilderness/Desert/Jungle/swamp or chinese kitchen combo.

I like to carry it over the shoulder.

If anyone finds that "One Knife Do All" blade let me know I will probably buy it!

Nice pics, nothing beats a good review thread with lots of pics!:D
Could you explain this over the shoulder carry a bit more?

That's a great looking knife bro and you also take some cracking pics !!!!

Nice shelter, show some more pics of the trip in general, if you don't mind.
Oh, and I like that carry a lot. I carry a radio and a protection alarm on me all day at work, and find it very cumbersome, so the last way I want to carry a knife is on my belt.
We will see when my kydex comes from Normark, though. :D

is that RC3 yours ? I have one and the RC3 is my Favorite blade....I EDC it everyday,so much simpler to have the RC3 than a pocket knife at my Job. I seen alot of pics of the trips but I don't recall any having one RAT blade in them.... Excellent pictures bro.... !

Hey thanks everyone for the positive feed.

Liam Ryan I posted the "Amazon Survival Trip" and "Nessmuk in the Amazon" threads in November. I didn't want to turn the attention toward the trip, but keep it on the knife rather. If you can do a search check it out. I can't use the search feature myself. I will try to post it. Your right about the trip pictures and the RAT. Mike Perrin carried on his belt and so did our survival instructor Aguilar. There are pictures on the RAT cutlery site of the RC-3 being used for deer skinning and shelter construction. That was the trip I was on. I was testing out a custom nessmuk in 01/osage sent to me from Dave (Leatherface) on the forums from Azriels Leather. I also carried a Mora 2000 but got a chance to molest the RC-3 in the hotel room before we headed out to the jungle.

I hope to see the RC-4 in Las Vegas at the SHOT show.

Hey texastonydobbs I have seen your posts on the other forums and I share your excitement with the RC-3 and soon to be RC-4. The RC-3 is mine but I didn't recieve it untill after the trip was over. It has some special wrtting on it as you can see.

I have the standard RC-3 but with the same etched scales... I edc the RC3 for my job...One of my most favorite blades ...Congrats on being able to experience the trip and owning the RC3 !

was that special etched RC3 part of the package of the amazon trip ? to me it would have special value and even though RAT blades are not collectible not the user models, but I would purchase a standard and save that baby as a show piece in a shadow box type thing with a few pictures surrounding the blade but that is just me.....

I hear you about the collectable thing. I wanted the RAT-3 before I went to Peru. Then I found out that we get an RC-3 after the trip so I decided to wait. I wanted to use the blade from the start. I just wish I had two! Beside Jeff would kick my ass if I decided to treat it like a collectable and not use it but it is special to me and and I don't need it to say anything to remember my time in Peru!

Texas what kind of chores do you use your knife for? Do you have the TAK?

at work cutting rope,boxes,aircraft interior,aircraft seat belts,a number of things RC3 just beat a pocket knife & the outdoors camp chores ,food prep,fire wood splitting ,alot of things....I have RTakII,TAK 1095 & D2 RAT7 1095 RAT3 1095& D2 & RC3 all PE.

Do the RC's have the same blade coating as the Ontario Rats? I've always been impressed with the coating on my TAK-1.

the coating on the RC3 looks to be better,I have looked at all of my RATs and RAt Cutlery blades and the RC coating seems to be better, more durable..the only one to me that is as tough is the coating on the RTAKII...but I am fond of the Green powder coat...

Different coating. I have the old TAK and took the coating off the blade but left it on the handle. I know what you mean, I have the same coating on the Ontaio 12" Machete it is tuff!

Texas post some pics of you wood splitting and working with the knife.

yeah,I told Jeff I would get him some pics of the RC3 at work....at my work .. yeah I really like the TAK..great blade for a lot of uses...
