RC-3 Real Use (pics)

On an all day hike I decided to use the RC-3 for some firecraft and trap making.

Tip first to split a small piece of wood.

I used it split damp wood since it had rained earlier.

Cattail fluff is excelent for naturall tinder. The little sparker quickly ignited the tinder. It had just rained a few hours ago.

After some hiking around it started to rain again. I sat under a big tree to get out of the rain. Eventually I had to pull out my cheap poncho. When the rain died down a bit I shaved some dry cattail stalks and used the shavings for kindling. I had a small contained fire on damp ground to warm me while I waited for the now sprinkles to stop completely.

With my feet wet from crossing a stream and the sun going down I decided to head back. It wasn't long before the rain came back. No poncho for me just used the RC-3 to cut a huge palm leaf for an umbrella.

Thanks. It was some real green but hard stuff growing around the river bed. It was real thick and strong on the inside.

Wow, you guys have totally sold me on this knife. These are extremely good value for money judging by what you have put yours through.

I have a Scrap Yard Yardkeeper LE which has similar dimensions to the RC3, although a lot thicker I think.

The thickness I could do without but its effective when batoning for sure.

I kinda wish I'd just bought the RC3 though and saved myself a lot of dough in the process. :D

Hey Buffalo,I have a DM Le also and it is a thick brute but The RC-3 IMO, is a excellent knife and I EDC it just like it was a leatherman....well it accompanies my LM wave..It is my favorite fixed blade knife I own and I own some nice blades (BK&T/Busse/swamprat/scrapyard/BRK&T/Ontario RAT and the list goes on) but I reach for the RC-3 , value /hard working blade...warranty and the Guys who stand behind Rat Cutlery Jeff/Mike...I am a life long customer of RC....

It looks like a very comfortable knife to tote.

What is the sheath like? It says it comes with a boot clip... do you wear it IWB or have you had another sheath made for it?

Mark

Extremely comfortable...the sheath does come with a boot clip but since I own the RAT-3 Ontario version(D2&1095),instead of breaking down the sheath for the RC3 to add the boot clip,I just swap it out with the RAT3 sheath ,since I have 2 rat3 sheath one with boot clip and the other with the tec-loc,saves me time and I can just swap sheath as it fits my needs. but yes I have it mounted using the boot clip and works excellent.

Just jumping in here, Nice knife, as much as I like my folders, I just might have to get one of those.

Nice pics', question though for RAT/Jeff; with all these companies with RAT in their names it's getting a bit confusing out here. Clear this up for me; are you using Ontario Rat 3 blanks and treating them yourselve's? What is your relationship to Ontario Knife co? And has Ontario Knife Co seen your improved version of their blade and made changes to their own Rat 3 design because of it? Appreciate the feedback, I know they put a lot of sterile Rat 3's into the hands of folks headed for the Big Sandpit.

First of all, see this: http://www.ratcutlery.com/about.htm

The RAT Cutlery line has no association with Ontario in any way. Mike and I designed both the Ontario RAT line and the RAT Cutlery line but this is the only thing the two lines have in common as far as association goes. Rowen Manufacturing builds the RAT Cutlery line for us and it is 100% made in the USA. Ontario builds the Ontario RAT line in Franklinville, NY.

Ontario has seen the RC-3. In fact, they have a sample that we gave them. As for producing "sterile" RAT-3's, that's news to me. Every Ontario RAT knife that has been produced by Ontario is supposed to be clearly marked with the appropriate lettering.

Hope this helps clear up any confusion. As for the RAT name, we've used it since 1997 when we started Randall's Adventure & Training (RAT). It's a cool name so I guess a lots of folks want to use it. I will say one thing though, everyone using the RAT name builds great knives ;)

Jeff

Thanks Jeff for clearing that up, I thought I did see some sterile unmarked Rat 3's a year or so ago in desert tan. But hey, after an all dayer looking at knives maybe I was mistaken. RC3 sure looks nice in the rounded pommel model.
