RC-3 Real Use (pics)

TAK rules and I know the RC-4 will be my favorite knife. I don't know if there will be too much the RC-4 does that the RC-3 won't be able to do. I love 1/8" blades. For me 3/16" is as thick as I will go.

Do you ever find the short blade length to be an issue or limiting factor? I had an Ontario Rat-3 and I wasn't that fond of the short blade for a fixed knife, but I think the upcoming RC-4 could be juuust right.

all blades no matter there size or thickness has limits.....but just messing around outdoors fishing/camping /hiking or hunting the RC3 can handle it ...IMO

I always felt that that the Rat-3 could use more belly. Since I traded it to a friend I'll ask if I can play with it again and see if the RC-3 would be right for me. But as it stands I think I'm holding out for the RC-4.

the RC3 has alittle more to offer than the RAT3 but not trying to sway you because you have to great choices RC3 or RC4 .....the RC4 maybe better for your application..

She likes RAT too.

Not trying to change the direction of the thread, but I have to say Bear is probably one of the best students we've had in the jungle. There's an old saying that the jungle either accepts you or spits you out, and we've had a lot that it spit out but Bear seems to be at home there. I would have no problem traveling anywhere in the world with him, especially in a survival situation.

Hey thanks everyone for the positive feed.

Liam Ryan I posted the "Amazon Survival Trip" and "Nessmuk in the Amazon" threads in November. I didn't want to turn the attention toward the trip, but keep it on the knife rather. If you can do a search check it out. I can't use the search feature myself. I will try to post it. Your right about the trip pictures and the RAT. Mike Perrin carried on his belt and so did our survival instructor Aguilar. There are pictures on the RAT cutlery site of the RC-3 being used for deer skinning and shelter construction. That was the trip I was on. I was testing out a custom nessmuk in 01/osage sent to me from Dave (Leatherface) on the forums from Azriels Leather. I also carried a Mora 2000 but got a chance to molest the RC-3 in the hotel room before we headed out to the jungle.

I hope to see the RC-4 in Las Vegas at the SHOT show.

Hey texastonydobbs I have seen your posts on the other forums and I share your excitement with the RC-3 and soon to be RC-4. The RC-3 is mine but I diddent recieve it untill after the trip was over. It has some special wrtting on it as you can see.

Mors Kochanski has been an influence on me after hearing about his book "Bushcraft". He shows how a small sharp fixed blade can easily cut through wrist size green branches for shelter poles and willow for trap parts. He explains the bending action puts tension on the wood fibers and opens the cut to allow the blade to slice through the wood more easily. The branch/small tree must be restrained from falling too soon and breaking which would make the cut harder to finish. Start the cut at about 30-40 degrees.

A rocking motion is needed.

Put a small amount of bend on the tree or branch.

A clean break.

The finished cut. Done right it takes less than 10 seconds.

I need some advice. I really like the look of the RAT-3, and now the RC-3. It seems a little short, so I thought I'd start saving up for an RC-4.

Here's the problem: for my 40th birthday, I bought myself a Scrap Yard Knives Street Scrapper 4 for $250. I figured this would fill the gap below my RAT-7, plus I was eager to try out INFI. Turns out there WAS no niche to fill, and I'm very disappointed in the knife (blade too thick and too narrow, point rounded like a butter knife so it won't pierce well, not sharp at all (though not hard to sharpen), and the coating had to be removed before I could sharpen it).

My RAT-7 is a tremendous knife. I use it for everything, and it's well made, well-balanced, and comfortable.

So is there really a need for a 4" knife? I REALLY like the look of the RC-4, but fear that if I buy one it'll just be another SS4 experience (except that I know I'll like the way it feels and cuts).

Thanks for any thoughts anyone may have on the subject.

the RC4 will not be a SS4...your looking at a 1095 steel vs. INFI (I think) plus the RC4 will be similiar to a RC3 but longer blade length. only busse products I own are a Dumpster Mutt le(SR77) & Natural Outlaw(INFI) and both are excellent blades but I find the RC3 in my hand more than any other maker that I own. Due to ease of re-sharpening, the blade not so freaking thick, cutting ability and ergonomics of the blade & handle ,fits my hand great;and the micarta handle does not cause blisters like the DMle handle. Can not comment on the SS4 due to never held one . I say pick up a RC-4 ... & if you don't like it I will trade you something for it later...but I will be getting me one for sure!!!!

Never owned a RAT but would like to try the RC4 when it comes out. I'd like an RC3 right now, but the price is keeping me away. Plus I've already got too many blades I haven't had a chance to abuse yet!

Nice pics', question though for RAT/Jeff; with all these companies with RAT in their names it's getting a bit confusing out here. Clear this up for me; are you using Ontario Rat 3 blanks and treating them yourselve's? What is your relationship to Ontario Knife co? And has Ontario Knife Co seen your improved version of their blade and made changes to their own Rat 3 design because of it? Appreciate the feedback, I know they put a lot of sterile Rat 3's into the hands of folks headed for the Big Sandpit.

Thanks for the reply! The SS4 is indeed INFI, which is the main reason I got it. The pictures I saw made it look slimmer and more pointed, but it was thick, narrow, and round on the end.

If the RC4 is anything like my RAT7 in terms of blade profile, feel in the hand, and cutting ability, it could be just what I'm looking for. And with a standing offer from you to take it off my hands, how can I go wrong?!

when you pick one up..let me know , I will trade you something for it,if you don't like it...I could always use a 2nd for my boy....But I have the feeling I will hafta buy 2 because once in your hand...it will be there... thx TTD
