The edge on my RC-3 (and it is an RC-3 from Rowen, before the change to ESEE) has a very thin edge. Quite nice! But I can believe it might end up with an issue going through a knot in the right (or wrong) piece of wood. I mean, it is a good steel, and a great knife, but it is just steel. Combine the thin edge with an imperfect hit with the baton, and powya... chip. It sounds like it wasn't TOO bad if maverick was still able to work it out of the edge.
Not a hit on RAT, ESEE, Rowen, or Maverick. Sometimes things just happen.
I have a D2 RAT-7 (Ontario vintage) that I unknowingly tried to baton through a nail in a piece of lumber, trying to knock some kindling off. I had been batonning with it a lot on that lumber, and it was knotty. But it had always gone through eventually. Not this time. I was astounded, couldn't figure it out. Until I got the knife out, and in the process noticed the other side of the piece, with a little bit of nail sticking out. The head had pulled off it, as I remember, so I didn't notice it at first. The amazing thing was the edge of the RAT, while slightly blunted, was in FAR better shape than I ever would have believed.
What does that have to do with this? Hmmmm... dunno. Maybe nothing except to say that sometimes even the best and most careful intentions are all for naught.
