Reacquainting myself with items in my collection...

This morning my favorite Case knife got put through the routine maintenance thing. It's a 2006 Case Cutlery manufactured 'Hobo Knife'.
This knife is extremely well made, it's almost like a piece of fine jewelry ๐Ÿ˜Š
Well, so much so, that the wipe down it received this morning was done with a Gold jewelry specific polishing cloth. The cloth also imparts a very fine protective treatment onto the surface that one buffs with it.

This Case 'Hobo' has nicely jigged bone scales that are free from any cracks, including around the pins. All three blades, (knife, fork, and spoon), are wobble free and well centered. It comes apart nice and easy, and goes back together just as easily. All fits together nice and tightly. Again, this one is my favorite Case ๐Ÿ‘

I have shared pics of this one before during this thread while discussing some of my Russian made knives, but I had not given it the routine TLC...
But, it did get some TLC today.

This double edged knife is one of my favorites out of my Russian made specimens ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

Like that whole crew in there!!!!! Nice group!

Thanks! ๐Ÿ˜Š

I tend to play musical chairs with the items within my collection's displays. I move this or that to some other display, or just rearrange things.
In many ways my eclectic collection is like owning a mini version of a museum, but of course it's done in a much less serious way ๐Ÿค“

I went this morning for my usual perusing of the local flea market.
Although I didn't find any knives that I just HAD to have, I was able to score on this vintage truncheon for $20, (I'm guessing made during the 1950's).
Well, once I got home with it, I went ahead and put it through the Renaissance Wax treatment. Since I already had the stuff out, I went ahead and did this Russian made 'Kizlyar' brand fixed blade knife as well ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘

Nice. I have a second pattern from them and it looks very nice. Where I got really lucky is I was able to get a sterile, balanced for throwing Fairbairn Sykes made by the Egginton group who still supply commonwealth forces.

Here it is pictured along with my favorite dagger and a fake fairbairn sykes made in India(claiming it was made in Spain).

Cool! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Yeah, Egginton has had contracts from the MOD in Britain in recent years for them.

Other than my Egginton made Wostenholm ixl Bowie knife, I have currently have nothing else of theirs.

I think Egginton, and most of the other remaining Sheffield England Cutlery businesses, are pretty much off the radar anymore here in the USA, but some of them are still producing some pretty cool old school hand crafted knives.

I received this new acquisition for my collection in today's mail. It's a Case 'Rio Grande Camp Knife'.
I'm really impressed with the quality work put into this knife by Case... And, to think I only found out about this model a few days ago! I had no idea that they had ever produced them ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

I love it when a full tanged fixed blade knife has a "tapered tang" ๐Ÿ‘

While my Case Hobo remains my favorite folding Case knife, this Case knife is now my favorite Case fixed blade knife ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

The knife was fully Ren Waxed shortly after I received it today...

It's quite the beautiful beast, my liking it more in hand than I even thought I would when I ordered it.
Although I do have two Case XX Bowie knives, (one with a black handle, the other one with the white), but they seem very mickey mouse compared to this one.
I really am surprised that this model didn't have staying power for them.
But, of course, with it being a discontinued model, it only makes it that much desirable to a person such as myself that just enjoys collecting such things ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘

For one second, but only for that one second, I seriously thought about giving this 3 foot tall suit of armor the Renaissance Treatment... But, I just as quickly backed out of the idea.
I simply did not want to get into such a project, but maybe sometime in the future I will take on that endeavor.

I did at least give it a lightly oiled soft cloth wipe down, which accomplished an acceptable level of routine maintenance on it ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ‘

That is lovely! what kind of oil do you use?

I've shown pics of this one before, but since it got the routine maintenance thing done on it today, I'm sharing pics of it again.
It's a Boker Arbolito 'El Gigante' with Stag handle scales.
A lightly oiled soft cloth wipe down is all I felt it needed, and it's all it received...

The Rio Grande Bowies have always intrigued me. Blackjack made a nice one as well ๐Ÿ‘.

Hereโ€™s an interesting knife. This is Ranger Knives RD7 made by Justin Gingrich before he sold the design to Ontario around 2006(?). In 2004 Justin bought around 700 5160 blanks from Jerry Busse in 2004. These are know as the โ€œapprentice blanksโ€, and came in varying lengths. That transaction started on this very forum. The older Justin Gingrich made RDโ€™s are distinctive from the newer Ontario made RDโ€™s. The Gingrich made knives have a bird head pommel with a 1/4โ€ talon hole, and the Ontario made pommels have a flattened jimped pommel with a slotted hole.

Somehow I never had the Rio Grande Camp Knives come across my radar screen. I didn't know about the original 1800's versions, nor did I know anything about the modern reproductions and other knives that were based on them.

In my opinion, the Case Cutlery versions do a really good job at keeping in line with the original specimens that they are based upon. With Case going as far as including the original tapered tang design, it was a nice touch that wound up being a big reason for my being drawn into purchasing one ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

I have found very little about them online. I mean, they seem to have been a real flash in the pan for Case.

Here are some pictures I found online of some original 1800's era Rio Grande Camp Knives...

And here again is my Case version of a Rio Grande Camp Knife. While it may not be an exact to the tee copy, it really does capture the spirit of the original design ๐Ÿ‘

The following picture shows a Case version I found online that has the 'Rio Grande Camp Knife' model name stamped, (or maybe etched), onto it's blade.

s-l1600~2.jpg

The model designation on the blade was something found on the originals too, but the lettering on the originals were much smaller and not stylized.
In my opinion, Case went too big with their lettering. I also don't care for the way they stylized the words "Rio Grande", but went with standard lettering for the words "Camp Knife".
I feel it would have been a bit better if they would have just used smaller standard lettering all the way through... Just my opinion ๐Ÿ˜Š
