Ready To Purchase My First Real Spyderco. Which Should I Start Off With For Decent $$

None of that makes sense. Why is it $220 for a $120 knife? This knife is only available from one place for $179 + shipping and it's in stock, so it's not $220 or $120. Unless you're comparing it to the standard one which is a $95 knife, sooo....why not spend $180 for a $180 knife?

+1 Go check out a Benchmade 806 in M390 and then go running back to the bargain-priced Blue Para-2 (that you can still buy at Bento for retail price).

Also - I had no idea that Knife Center was in College Park - that is pretty awesome to be able to walk into a massive Knife place like that - great idea.

The M390 AFCK is only $20 more and it's bigger with rounded multicolor G10 and colored standoffs. I normally don't argue against the value of Spyderco, but even at $20 less, the Para is the more over priced of the two. Any other dealer and the Para would have probably been $150-$160.

Wait - are you saying you can still get the M390 806 AFCK for $199? I've only seen them for $350 in the secondary market. Crap, I might be buying one if that's the case. Yeah, for $199, I'd say it's probably a better value than the Para (and that's really hard for me to say being a Para-2 junkie).

I was ready to retort your Bento-high-priced comment until I looked up the price of the CTS-204P model at a few retailers, holy cow - I thought the CTS-XHP one was just overly cheap for what it was, but I guess maybe the Blue one was over-priced.

Bento Box charges a bit more than some of the other dealers. And yeah, you can still get the Black AFCK for $199 :).

Yeah, I bought a blue M390 Para-2 (and ordered an Orange one). You sir, have a visitor message... :)

I didn't get the blue one. I really wanted an M390 Para, but I don't really dig blue. I did get the orange and the green though :). Gray one is in the mail (my favorite, had one and sold it).

Not to take this thread completely off-track, but you might like the blue you get with Royal Blue RIT dye and Foliage Green - I did that to my Manix-II and it ended up almost a dark-purple-blue:

That looks nice, def better than the bright blue, but it's a little too close to Duke colors for me ;).

And dont forget moonglow (first & second sprint runs).

I'd still go with a Delica for my first one...

Wow, tons of information to read through. Let me go ahead and read through all these posts (thank you for your input) and then I'll be able to make an intelligent reply to you guys.

@actionyak, Thanks and I just replied to your email. :)

OK, I've read through all the posts I believe. Now actionyak make me an offer for one of the top Spyderco knives that is just slightly above my budget and I feel I would be passing up an oppertunity to get a very cuvotad knife that really has worked it's way into the top of my Top 10 knives to get.

Having said that I still really like the Maxim and really like the Delica. If anyone is willing to sell me one of these at a good deal (I'm going to be poor for the next few months at least) then I'd be glad to either take you up on your offer or see if you'd be interested in a payment that would be partially monetary and partly in trade. This would allow me to get several Spydies that I want (interstingly they are mostly all the ones mentioned by you guys and I have checked them out first hand and not just pictues on the Internet) and be able to afford them.

Let me know what you might be interested in regarding vintage or older knives and perhaps we can work something out.

Just because I'll probably end up buying the Para2 from actionyak doesn't mean that this would be the end of my desire to acquire several other Spydie's out there. It's just that I need to get a really good deal in order to not have my family go hungry this month due to unforeseen expenses which resulted in my very small knife buying budget.

Feel free to email or PM me and just put this thread title in the message title so I don't accidentally miss it when scanning through my email.

Just out of curiosity and because I might just want to get one. Which Spyderco is one of the lowest in price (Bug doesn't count as I own one already) that has at least a 2.75 inch blade and is truly a far better knife than the price would suggest?

Edit: There really isn't a "maybe" about it, if there is a Spyderco out there that sells for around $30 or more less that much and it is really highly thought of by the Spyderco enthusiast community then I'm interested in knowing what it is and the best place to buy it. Online or off line.

And dont forget moonglow (first & second sprint runs).

Edit 2: I absolutely love the customizations on the Delica. How much should I expect to spend to trick it out like the one you've got pictured?

I'm a big fan of the Centofante 3. Same price point as the Delica, slightly bigger (79mm blade compared to 73), thin blade with a shape that works better for me, and looks that aren't out of place when dressed up. If I had to only carry a single Spyderco, it'd be a toss up between the C3 and the (pricier) Stretch.

OK, I decided to gamble and buy a knife (on Ebay) that I know nothing about except what is written and the fact that it was inexpensive. I actually liked the aesthetics of this knife and that is the real reason I bought it but if the price wasn't $25 I wouldn't have bought it. Simply put I bought a bargain knife that appealed to me based on looks and blade length which is something I seldom do.

Here are the specifications, please tell me if I did well for $25 (including shipping) or if I screwed up'

I'll still be getting the Para2 come March but I wanted to have a larger Spyderco so that it'd be part of the February collection of knives I bought.

Here's my question:
Does anyone have any experience with this knife & if so, do you think positively of this knife or do you think it's a piece of junk?

Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I didn't pay much for this knife. I paid a total of $25 including shipping so please feel free to let me know your honest thoughts. I would like to mention that I'm pleased that it has a longer blade.

add some budget and buy pm2

I already have an oral agreement with member of this board about the purchase of a Para2 at the start of March after I get paid. I agree with you that it's a sweet knife.

I've never had a Byrd before, but I doubt Spyderco would release cheap crap under any name. I've always heard good things about them.

Those are factory moonglow Manix-II's and you might want to be careful, this whole thread is starting to sound like a way to bypass the classifieds and/or begging folks to give you the best deals on Spydercos.

Welcome to the addiction, but take it easy man... Live life one knife at a time :)

Go to dealer site. Look at Spydercos. Sort by price.

Under $30, fitting your description is the Persistance. That's about it.

I think you'll like it. I don't own the flight, but do own a Byrd Cara Cara Rescue and Byrd Finch and they're really good knives for the price I paid, about $14 and $8, respectively. The only reason I wouldn't buy the one you bought is because I just don't dig stainless steel handles. But if you like that, you'll probably like the knife.

The fact that it's hollow ground versus FFG means it won't be the ultimate food prep slicer or anything. But it will still be a good cutter. Enjoy it.
