Really stupid statement.

well i have read this thread for the most part and i have an idea that will suit me.

i am going to put a lock on my fixed blade. that seems to be the final word :)

then if the lock fails it will not matter.
 
I think that it's true that locking folders are more forgiving of human error, but they are certainly not necessary for a pocket-knife to safe to use.

Yes.

Folks have been using non-locking folders for self defense for decades before locking folders were common.
Folks have used straight razors, hawkbills, cattle knives, pocket-knives, box-cutters, utility knives, you name it!

During the 60's and 70's I can clearly remember when non-locking hawkbills were all the rage.
The great thing about them was how fast you could open them....
You grasp the hump of the blade and as you draw if from your pocket you drag the handle across your thigh, thus popping the blade open in one smooth motion.
It took a bit of practice but it was rather impressive for a fast deployment of a traditional slip-joint from inside the pocket.
