Good idea, I will ask them what the maw blade limit is. I really like the Tenacious Carbon Fiber, so it would be good if they allowed me to get it.

I talked to my mom, and she looked like she was starting to agree with me. (I said the things you guys suggested I say, it seems like it may have worked!)

I have decided the SAK is going to be my second purchase, but I will/am going to get one - not sure which model yet, because there are so many options.

These are my top 3 choices:

https://www.bladehq.com/item--Victorinox-Pioneer-X-Swiss-Army--64507
https://www.bladehq.com/item--Victorinox-Swiss-Army--4042

Here is the plan - I am going to get a Spyderco knife. If they let me, I will get the Carbon Fiber Tenacious. If not, I will get the Persistence. (As it’s pretty much just a mini model)

(Still not sure on no clip or clip, I talk to them again today...)

All good choices! Good Luck!

Just found out that BladeHQ was out of stock on the Tenacious CF. Any other good sights? (I have been suggested not to buy off of Amazon)

I looked on both KnifeCenter and DLT Trading - neither have the Spyderco Tenacious in Carbon Fiber. (With a black blade - DLT trading has one that is in Carbon fiber, but has a silver blade)

Should I wait until BladeHQ has it back in stock?

No...that knife was a limited edition from 3 years ago that still shows up on those dealer websites for some reason. I'd recommend moving on to something else.

For what it’s worth, I have owned both a Tenacious and still own a Persistence. I found the touch shorter of the blade on the Persistence to be more useful in day-to-day tasks.
The Tenacious is a great knife too, but a bit large for me to EDC, and took up too much space in my pocket.

if by silver you mean stonewashed, I would get that. Stonewashed hides scratches very well. If it is a polished blade, I am not as enthusiastic.

I agree with the guys recommending Spydercos. They have so many models of varying features, there is something for every size and use and every budget. Mow a couple extra lawns and you can get a really quality knife from them. I have a couple grand in knives probably, and plenty of others that have passed on through my hands, but I could most likely live the rest of my life with a Spyderco Delica or two for pocket carry and get along just fine.

For assisted openers the ones I had that were decent were SOG Twitch models, but I would agree that a manual folder is a better choice. When you get old enough you can buy some real automatics which are way more fun than assisted openers anyways.

I respectfully disagree. While it's true they have a lot of models, it can be very hit or miss, especially when you're not experienced in the hobby. Given the price tag of most spyderco knives, I wouldn't recommend it to a guy looking to get started in the hobby on a budget.

The Pioneer X model is only a few years old but, very popular.

Before it was offered people were buying a plain Pioneer and adding scissors on their own. A costly project because you had to by a second knife to get the scissors.

A lot of work for just adding a small pair of scissors if you ask me.

Did you look at the Alox Farmer?
Many people swear up and down that it is the best Alox knife offered.

Others feel the Alox Electrician is best.

Many of us feel the Alox is the way to go but they all use the same steel, Alox or not.

As for the Spyderco Tenacious, it is a fine knife and the first Spyderco I ever owned. For me it just took up to much room in my pocket so I got rid of it.

Sal Glesser designed it for first time Spyderco buyers. Very comfortable knife in your hand and an excellent budget Spyderco
knife.

It really works best with a pocket clip though. If the clip is still an issue with your parents, I would recommend the purchase of a SAK before the Spyderco.

Was unaware that it was discontinued... lovely knife, but I can’t find it anywhere - gonna move on.

Did you look at GPKnives?
I just checked, no such luck. :(

It is not stonewashed, it is silver. I love the look of stonewashed blades, but I could not find one in that model.

Do you guys recommend a silver (not stonewashed, polished) blade, or a black blade? Both look good, but I remember someone saying that black blade were not as good or something...?

Silver: https://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Persistence--4067
Black: (never mind... they don’t even sell a black-bladed Persistence...)

If I can persuade them to let me get a Tenacious, I will do so. (G-10 handles with black blade. If not, the persistence.)

But, what are your guys view points on blade blades vs polished? (I added a poll, please vote)

I like the Pioneer X but I prefer a pliers-based Multi-tool. Pliers are one of the handiest tools to have on hand. The big question for SAKs and multi-tools is which tools you'll actually use versus what will end up being dead weight plus wasted bulk in your pocket. I've carried all sorts of multi-tools from the Leatherman Wave to the SAK Super Tinker. Most of the time, my EDC needs are adequately met between an EDC folder and a Leatherman Squirt PS4. The Squirt packs a fantastic amount of utility into a tiny package.

As far as the Tenacious or the Persistance, ~$50 is way too much for 8Cr13Mov in 2020. Given a lot of personal experience with it over the years and what the market looks like today, I would not pay more than $30 for a knife in 8Cr13Mov. There are just too many companies offering nice knives in better steels for less than $50. I understand the allure of Spyderco. If you really have your heart set on a Spyderco, I'd recommend saving up the difference to get one in VG-10.

Most of your dull, silver finishes will be termed "satin", as opposed to polished or stonewashed which require the added step of polishing or stonewashing for the respective result. I tend to prefer a silver blade (whether it be satin, stonewashed, or polished) over black but mostly just for aesthetic reasons. A functional advantage for black blades really only applies to outdoor knives made with high carbon steels because it helps protect from corrosion. For an EDC knife though it will come down to mostly aesthetics.

In general I am not the biggest fan of black blades, except when the coating is protecting (black oxide)the blade steel such as a tool steel like Z-Wear. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to, but I don't need blacked out for my special ops and it has a bit of a mall ninja feel to me-that is totally a personal opinion and I mean no offence to those that like black blades.
My hands down favorite is stonewashed
but I have some polished and some satin
no black at this time
not much of a fan of bead blast blades either

:) Main functional reasons for black blades is for corrosion resistance on non-stainless steels and for camouflage on fighting , combat , survival , and /or SD knives .

On folders for EDC , for most people it's really just whichever looks better to you .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Honestly get a SAK Cadet. It's the most useful knife I own, it's cheep, lots of colors and no one is scared of it. You sound like you are in a hard spot with your parents being not so open to knives. Perhaps ask what grandpa used and open that conversation and use that as an avenue to get a knife like that............

Oh....and you will need the bottle opener on the cadet sooner or later. For root beer and coke.....
