It's been getting very frustrating on this end, I log on, then go through a few posts before things freeze up. Log out, then log back on but the lags continue.
Spark, maybe the best thing is to post an announcement and shut things down until the problem can be resolved thoroughly. Members here will understand this, and it will be worth the wait.
I can't say I'd be happy with shutting the site down for any amount of time. I'd rather wade through the lags.
Ditto. But I have to say I've been doing a lot less "wading" since the recent problems have started.
This is a diagnostic nightmare that still hasn't been figured out. There is something wrong. Period. Kevin's current website guru's haven't got a clue, or they would have solved it. That's why he's angry and we're frustrated.
The elimination of long threads, search functions removed, etc have all been an attempt to find the source or calm it, but methinks it is ALL barking up the wrong tree. Been corrupted for what, a year or two?
Looking forward to an answer someday soon.
Kevin, thanks for your diligence.

Maybe move to phpBB ?(I'm joking).
Maybe it's the vBulletin version...I post quite a bit in Luger Forums http://forum.lugerforum.com/, which use "Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.7.4" and who host all their own images, and I have no problem with outages, time-outs, lags, etc...
I don't recall what Spark had before vBulletin 3.8.1, but IIRC, it had much better performance...
I had little experience with vBulletin before coming to BF, but several other forums I do use have no problems running threads out to 1000+ pages.
Do they use vBulletin version 3.8.1, or an earlier version???
Microsoft Windows is an excellent example of newer software versions being worse than previous ones...and bloatier...and slower...![]()
phpBB3 actually.![]()
I'll tell you one site that I have no problems with, and which has a humongous
userbase (3160 users online right now), is AR-15.com -
http://www.ar15.com/forums/
But I can't find a software version, or what software they run, anywhere...
(The Most Users Online Was 28,890 On 3/28/2008 4:09:02 PM EDT)![]()
AR15.com said:In 2001, after a few years with troubled software and an ever expanding user base, AR15.Com scrapped the common software used throughout the internet and begin to create custom software for their users. The site changed to better handle the flow of information as well as a new goal, the long term storage of information. As site costs grew, the hobby quickly became a business, requiring the added support of the community in order to continue.
AR15.Com has since dedicated itself to continued improvements and expansion of services. Having secured top notch network services, hardware, and software, site work often entails a large amount of database tweaking and expanded coding to ensure everything is optimized and functioning at high levels. The stability of the site, which was often it's greatest weakness, is now it's biggest strength.
From their "About" page:
...I wonder if they license the use of their Forum software...maybe for less than vBulletin does???...![]()
Also, ARFCOM has basically 90 days worth of data available for searching, and even then they wound up putting their EE onto a separate custom application.
Put it another way - dealer memberships there are $2400 a year. They are the king of the gunboards and run it accordingly.
