Recommend me a tank folder!

How about a Microtech DOC? It is a Marfione Strider collaboration, an SMF with a Microtech twist.

spend less than $ 175.00 and buy a Buck 882 police grade, screw scales. ats 34, bos. this is reasonable, you can trade or sale always get money back. later contact someone like triple R knives, and beg Leroy to do a little grind work on it. With the screw scales the color patterns are endless.Get some kyroglows, or what you like.. make it yours then move up. Plus you will always have a great nail file. Ha.

Another vote for the Contego. It's a hulk knife, and is MUCH stronger than my Benchmade 140 fixed blade.

Plus, M4 is magical.

I really like the Contego. I was thinking about picking up the M390 version, but it seems too pretty to mess up. Plus I've always wanted to try M4. We may have a winner here, people!

I was very surprised to see how beastly this guy actually was...

Very thick blade (4.5mm), Elmax blade & thick Ti lock with SS insert

Have you ever had the spring fail on a Benchmade axis lock. It's quite unpleasant (especially if your fingers are in the way at the time). I have yet to have a framelock fail. I'd say a true "tank" has to be a framelock.

I've yet to have any lock fail on me.

Grayman Dua or Satu or the Hogue EX01 as stated in a couple posts above. The EX01 comes in 3.5 and 4 inch blades, the Duas are 3 inch, and the Satu is a 4 inch blade. All are very tank-y. Some pics of the Dua and EX01:

I love the spyderco tuff. Super steel and ultra heavy duty with a fair price! Can't be beat for the money!

It's an intimidating knife no doubt. I had no idea till I saw it behind the case that it was that big.... but I knew it was the Contego as soon as I saw her because of the blade shape. I said ""hmm, can I take a look at that one"? The fella kind of grinned. Needless to say I picked up my first BM.:D That steel is incredible.

I'll add to this. That axis lock is fine and I like it, it's different. I'd like to have one of every lock out there. I'm getting there. Having said that, when all is said and done I have to agree with you. A properly made frame lock over anything else anytime with the bolt action lock my second choice.

From personal experience:
Hogue EX-02
Spyderco Gayle Bradley
ZT 0200
ZT 0560/1
Strider (never could warm up to the small cutting surface, though)
Hinderer (just avoid Gen 3 XM-18. Craptacular detents, and he states specifically that he doesn't fix detents)
Benchmade Adamas
Cold Steel Voyager/Spartan/AK47/Rajah. Yeah, it's AUS8, but they're insanely solid.

From conjecture alone:
Anything made by Medford, Rockstead, Demko, or Direware.
Demko's knives, if you order directly from him and are willing to wait, cost less than secondary market prices of Hinderers and are probably the most expensive knives that I consistently hear of people actually using.

Things I was looking at:

BM Contego
TSF Beast
Strider
Spyderco Military

Any advice out of those? User feedback is appreciated!

I've had multiples of #2,3, and 4. Never had a Contego, but hear good things about it.
Do a Search on the Demko AD-10. I mean it, some of the best people here, who have tons of blade-testing videos, swear by it. Yes, I've had maybe eight SMF's. I only have only one SMF right now, NIB. It is great; it's NOT heavy...just HEAVY-DUTY. SMF has a blade-thickness of 0.190". Their Customer Service is the VERY BEST. I've used it. A good friend of mine has used it.
I don't EDC a folder that is that heavy-duty. My EDC needs are light and casual. I don't need a tank. But you want one; that's great.

In my ranking, I would suggest the Demko AD-10, Spyderco TUFF in CPM-3V blade-steel, Strider SMF, TAD Dauntless (beautiful piece of work), and Grayman SATU (obvious tank). I haven't owned a Demko or a SATU, but I have a GRAYMAN DUA (smaller than SATU) and it's very solid and fits my hand very well. I have the TUFF, SMF and TAD and they are excellent.
Good luck in your search.
